Long live "Windows 8-style UI":
We could just call them WinRT apps, but that'll get confused with WinRT the ARM based version of Windows 8.
Or we could just not call them.

Surface apps?
edit: METRO AG isn't in the software business, and they don't even make underground transportation devices. How would it even hold up in court one would say... I would think there's something else behind it.
Metro is dead, long live M.E.T.R.O?
(Microsoft Enhanced Technology for Rendering Objects)
...... so I guess it will be called RT.
Or maybe WinApp UI style?
Afterall, we know what Apps are.
This is the thank we get for liberating Germany. I wonder how the company Metro AG would've fared under Hitler.
Ironically I have a Metro Cash and Carry card but still didn't make the connection.
How about MS just changes the name to METO, I'm sure nobody would notice ...
@DCMonkey: Microaosft is really good at screwing up decent codenames...
I liked Metro: simple, short and to the point.
How about they call it LCARS? It looks pretty similar anyway. ![]()
You'd think it's impossible, but they managed it: "Windows 8-style UI apps" is even more awkward than "Metro style apps". Great job guys.
new geometric, typography-heavy look-and-feel
"Euclideotopical Gravity apps"

The World Wrestling Federation (WWF) had to change it's name due to the World Wildlife Fund, and the two are obviously not in the same space. Further, thew World Wrestling Federation was by far more well known at the time. There doesn't have to be anything else behind it.
"Windows 8-style UI apps" is horrible, though. Not only is it a typical Microsoft name (i.e. way too long and stupid), but it's got a shelf life. What are we going to call them when Windows 9 is released?
actually 'Immersive' was quite good I think.
I was just told this too by our project manager...just starting to design some Windows 8 apps for Microsoft. Going to be tough not using "Metro" since it's part of the vocabulary of design now.

That's their internal name for it. Official names have not been revealed yet.
Metro was just a design language that seemed to stand for almost anything that had flat buttons and monochromatic icons. What they've been referring to have been implementations of Metro, but they were not all the same.
TheVerge said:The Windows team is "working on a replacement term" according to the memo, "and plans to land on that by the end of this week." Until then, employees have been advised to refer to the Metro style user interface as the "Windows 8 style UI.

Code names almost never make it past RTM at Microsoft anyway so this is not a surprise.
How about Netro, it is nature on nitro steroid.
