.NET 4.5 in Practice: Bing

.NET GC developer Maoni Stephens, Performance Architect Vance Morrison and Bing front end developer Mukul Sabharwal join us for a conversation about .NET 4.5 in practice.

We spent some time with the.NET 4.5 team earlier in the year. You can see the series of conversational interviews we did here.

The Bing front end is powered by .NET 4.5 and Windows Server 2012 RC. This constitutes a large number of servers doing a lot of work. How do some of the new .NET 4.5 features (like multi-core JIT and background GC) scale? Bing's a rather good test case for both .NET 4.5 and WS 2012 given the volume of requests it serves.

Pinning and Heap Corruption (and strategies for alternative approaches to pinning).

Performance tuning and PerfView

Background GC

EastBanc Technologies Unifies Data from Multiple Transit Systems Using Windows Azure

Founded in 1999, EastBanc Technologies is a Washington, DC-based software development and system integration company. It has an international portfolio of customers and specializes in mobile applications development, enterprise portal solutions, business intelligence, and cloud computing. Eastbanc Technologies used Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform to develop the Public Transit Data Community (PTDC), a Windows Azure-based solution that aggregates static and real-time data from many mass transit operators in SQL Azure, exposes it in a variety of common formats (e.g. OData, KML), and enables independent developers to build innovative transportation applications on a variety of platforms and devices.

In this interview with Vlad Vinogradsky, several members of the EastBanc Technologies team - Wolf Ruzicka (CEO), Evgeny Popov (Microsoft Practice Lead), and Vadim Zagorodniy (Project Lead) – told the story behind the project, explained the reasons for hosting the solution in the Windows Azure, described solution architecture, and showed a few awesome applications (including a free Windows Phone 7 application) for commuters they have developed using the data provided by the solution.

Bing Image of the Day Hits the Desktop

One of the really cool features of Bing is the image of the day. Someone at Microsoft has the delightful task of researching and selecting images that serve as the background to your daily web searches. With tips and trivia included for each image, the often stunning photography can brighten up your day.

Whilst there are now a number of Windows 7 theme packs with collections of the Best of Bing images, new this month is a Bing desktop gadget which combines the daily image with a search bar – so it’s even easier to search the web, and you don’t miss out on the image of the day.
