The only thing I'd point out is that it's always been the women who have to carry the water.  I just got back from visiting a remote school in Kenya, where they've put in an Aussie windmill.   Many women and children still carry water in big containers on their heads up to seven or eight kilometers every day!

 

One of the changes coming with cloud computing is that it has to be simpler than an internal solution, such as SBS, is currently.  Maybe the point could be (in your analogy)  that when the source of water is further away (ie more difficult) you will be more likely to employ an external resource!
