Windows 8 App for Channel 9 now available

You’ve seen this app before in various forms (we had a version in the consumer preview for Windows 8, and a beta up on the forum for awhile), but the v1 release just hit the Windows store.

1 Hub

Features

  • Pin your favorite shows and keep up to date with Live Tiles
  • Watch videos with your choice of Progressive or Smooth Streaming technology
  • Snap our videos to the side and keep watching while doing other things
  • Download our videos and watch them offline
  • Search Channel 9 content or Share using the Windows 8 Charms

The app is focused on watching video (you won’t see the forums, or even text-only Coding 4 Fun articles in there at the moment), and includes all of our event sessions in addition to our regular videos.

On the roadmap

Our next step is focused on enabling authentication in the app, connecting you to your account on Channel 9, which would let us bring your queue into the app, video ratings, and more.

Looking forward to your feedback!

  • Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@Bas: Sorry about that, we saw it hitting some of the European countries so I thought it was fully replicated. I'm sure it is on its way!!

  • BasBas It finds lightbulbs.

    I'll be patient then. Wink

  • CharlesCharles Welcome Change

Awesome! Great job - and thanks for implementing Windows 8 contracts, too! Smiley

  • Finally! Have been waiting for it since the preview was pulled from the store. Good job with the app, looks clean and polished, yet functional.

  • Awesome, Just what I was looking for Wink

Also sorry there is a problem with my 1280 x 1024 resolution screen. The right side of the screen is cut off. Sad

  • Simon HolmanSimon Holman

This isn't available in the Store on my Windows 8 PC or my Surface RT. Is this only available in the US? I'm in Australia.

  • Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@Simon Holman: It is on the way, sorry for the confusion, but I guess I underestimated the time it takes an app to appear in stores around the world.

  • If you do not have to wait longer tolerate

They use VPN to download Wink

  •  I still prefer the website, But only for high download options (third party)

  • @Caleb Scribner:Yes, very good, but too late

  • Hey! Why is it only available in US store???

  • The application is still not available in Denmark. The propagation seems to be taking quite some time.

  • Great application, watching Ping now on it.

Needed to change the location from Canada to US to find it in the Store and download it also to see the previous reviews.

    Thanks.

  • Nice... Getting it. Available in Macedonia.

Hmm, still not in the UK.  How long does it usually take to replicate fully?

  • Nope, still can't find it in the UK Store

  • Guys, are you sure that you selected all the available markets when you published it? Because it's a little odd that after three days it's still not available in Italy

  • Simon HolmanSimon Holman

Still not available in Australia either

  • David FibingrDavid Fibingr

    Not available in Canada? :(

  • Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@AlessandroV: Well, to be honest, I have no idea. When we submit 1st party apps (Microsoft), we don't do the submission ourselves, we give it to the store to handle. I'm trying to get confirmation that they picked all markets.

  • got it here in Colombia.  works great! but it's sad it cannot use "play to" my XBOX...

btw:  where's my Channel9 Xbox app?

  • Nigel SampsonNigel Sampson

    Not available in NZ?

  • CaraCara9 (Not Pictured)
Really sorry those of you who can't get it yet, like Duncan said, we're working with the store to get it figured out. @raptor3676 - We did program playto to work in this app so I'm curious why it doesn't work for you. Does your Xbox not show up when you click the Devices charm or is something else happening?
  • Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

just an update for anyone wondering, the app *is* going to show up everywhere, soon. If you can't find it, please check again in a day or two. If you could chime back in on this thread when you *do* see it, that would be great too!

  • @cara9 sorry.  My bad! "Play to" works great just test it a moment go

  • WPDownUnderWPDownUnder

Folks. Change your Win8 region via desktop--> control panel to US. Open the store, download and install the CH9 App then change back to your actual region and the App will still be there and working fine!

    :) Ssshhh!

  • Created a blog post explaining how to get the application to install. http://moln1.wordpress.com/2013/04/02/windows-8-app-for-channel-9/

  • @WPDownUnder Thanks for that tip. Works in UK now Smiley

  • IRBIRB

Still not up in the UK yet, but there seems to be issues with the Windows Store. I've got some app stuck in Publishing for 5+ days now as have many others, hopefully they will fix this and the backlog will start filtering through.

  • Still not available in the UK Sad

  • TannerTanner

Oh, it's here!! It's available in Denmark. Nice app, and with semantic zoom too! Veeerry nice! :)

  • Cool. But, I don't understand what's up with the layout:

Looks like I'm missing most of the functionality described. Also - does the app truly not support the search charm, or is that just my version too?

  • CaraCara9 (Not Pictured)
@dcuccia - looks like you downloaded the wrong app Smiley Try using the link Duncan provided in the post above to get our official app.
  • Ha! Of course I did. Thanks Cara9. Smiley
  • We have lift off in the UK!!

All I need now is time to play!

  • It is now available in Denmark.

  • I have been looking forward to this! Hopefully it'll get me watching even more C9 content again - I haven't so much recently - but Play To with the Xbox will no doubt change that.

  • The app is fine but I think it is typical of many Windows apps and not in a good way, e.g. you get about 50% of the functionality of existing web sites. For example no comments and super poor navigation and generally extremely poor graphic design- whereas design and interactivity should be an advantage for Windows 8 apps otherwise why bother?

From TheRegister to Air France to Amazon to so many other Windows 8 apps, why is it so?

  • Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@cedricmi: Completely understand about the reduced functionality, we made some choices about what was important in the app experience and we decided it was all about watching videos. We will be adding in more features as we move forward. As far as poor navigation, I don't agree personally, I find navigating in the app to be super easy... perhaps if you gave some examples of where you found it difficult that would help us to plan future changes.

As far as the general comment about reduced feature sets in other apps, I can't speak to the general case, but I can imagine that if you have been developing a web application like Amazon over many years, the depth of features would exceed a new UI that you just created. Also, just like we did, I expect that each company is trying to optimize for certain use cases for their Windows 8 app, instead of just handling everything. I think this is true for app development across multiple platforms, reducing the scope of a touch-focused app to make it easier and simpler to use. Over time I'm sure that some of these apps will get to parity with their existing web experiences.

  • The app is good, but...

Feature Request: A "Recent" category that lists all the content that I recently watched, because sometimes I get interrupted and have to search for it again when I come back later.

  • Kamran MackeyKamranMackey I love the Internet.

Great! Will download the app from the Windows Store now. From the screenshot it looks amazing. But I have to try it and find out! Big Smile

Hi, I'm using the app mainly with the play-to feature to watch videos on my TV via xbox and that works great. Would be nice if the display turned off when it's playing on the TV though, save a bit of battery.

But..  I'm currently watching the videos from the MMS 2013 events and I have a grid of very similar thumbnails and captions that are along the lines of 'Interview: Micr....'.  I'll be honest that browsing through these videos to find what I want to watch is a horrid experience, in and out the details page, the thumbnail page does not remember where you where so always scrolls back to the start when you back out the details etc.

When you have a lot of videos (Build/MMS) please give me an option to see the videos in a list view with full titles.

It would be nice that when your in the details page for a show or series there was a next/prev so you could move through the videos in a series.

My current workflow is find the video I want via the website and then search and play it from the C9 app.  I also notice the videos in the search screen have the full title, while pretty much everywhere else has truncated titles.

Being able to get access to the my play queue from the website would be a massive feature.

  • Can't wait for the authentication and connection to profile of Channel 9. Awesome app so far! Big Smile

  • No CC function in Silverlight player?.

  • CaraCara9 (Not Pictured)

@QuocTruong: Do you mean on the website or in the app? On the website we do have a CC function on both the Silverlight and HTML5 players if there are closed caption files provided by the content owners.

    Here is an example: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2013/DBI-B307

I do need to add this functionality to the HTML5 player in the app though so thank you for the reminder!

  • @Cara9: I mean in the app. Thanks you Smiley.
