Congrats to Channel9 on this "catch"!

Q: Can you talk to someone in MS do some productivity improvements in unmanaged world (C++)? I now that .net is red-hot - but a lot of developers still have to use C++, and working with C# and watching it evolve makes C++ world look very gray with it's horrible sound-to-noise ratio. Even pre-compiler form MS-specific-C++ to standard C++ would be nice.

We're looking at doing this exact thing.  In addition to regular C9 style interviews, Rory most likely will do a weekly show too.  Not sure if that will be Audio/Video or both.

Very exciting times ahead for C9!

Yeah, I noticed that. Hummingbird mode is kind of normal for him. Maybe the pelvic thrusting is setting him up to be the Microsoft Duffman.

So, ah, what's wrong with stargate sg-1? Rory, you haven't lived until you've gone to an ancient egypt exhibit with friends/family and explained every exhibit in the context of the show. I spent a day at a museum with family doing that, and they had never seen the show and thought I was seriously nuts. Their young kids actually started to believe me.

For some strange reason, I want to see Rory interview Bill Hill. I don't quite know why, but it just popped into my head. Either they'll get along great, or Rory will end up going on a "nature walk" and not coming back. Either way it'll make for great video. Tongue Out

Ok, enough of my attempts at inane rambling. Have fun Rory, we'll miss you on the events circuit. BTW do you know who will replace you? Please tell me it won't be some boring corporate wonk.

Rory will bring himself into Channel 9 and add his specific ingredients to the soup.

I stressed that Rory is not a replacement for Scoble simply because that would make it seem like we were actually looking for a replacement for Scoble. In fact, we were looking for someone new. A different voice. A fresh perspective.

And, I'm now free to really go off the Going Deep end Smiley

I'm really excited to have another full time interviewer (actually, conversationist is the correct terminology for a Channel 9 video person) to work with.

Should be a fun, educational, and different year on C9.

Seriously, I can't believe I got this job. When I was driving back to the airport tonight, I just kept thinking, "Wow... *nobody* deserves a job this cool."

I hope to deliver and make you people happy. When I got the notification that I had been accepted for the position, my world froze for a moment. I couldn't believe it. Still can't. It's... Just. Too. Cool.

And the people I've met in building 18 are all awesome. As someone who's been in the field, I really look forward to actually working in an office with people I see on a daily basis, and Charles Torre (my mentor and partner in crime), is just... yeah. Wow. He's really laid back, has a lot of ideas, and I'm just so lucky to be working with him.

I can also tell that Jeff is going to be quite the boss.

I could go on, but I'll save it for my own blog Smiley I simply met too many people who blew me away with talent. C9 is actually an impressively small team considering how much work gets done.

Anyway - onto the other comments.

I can't promise anything, but I can tell you this:

1. In the interview, Charles said they couldn't fire me - I haven't checked with my attorney yet, but this might be legally bnding

2. Jeff said I could whatever I wanted to be successful

3. I have a company credit card

Seriously, though, Jeff has stressed that C9 is like this weird things where if someone has an idea, and the idea's good...

...it just might happen.

So we'll see what happens this year. We've already chatted about a few ideas, and I expect to learn much more as I come on board.

You're making me nostalgic. Carl and I are probably better friends now than we were back in the DnR days, but I still miss doing that show. Thsoe Friday nights, hectically switching back and forth between IRC and our own DnR custom conferencing software - it was crazy. And fun. And what Carl's built is amazing.

To be honest, those sorts of interactions aren't what I'll be doing.

BUT...

If I ever interview someone on the unamanged C++ team, I'll try to keep that in mind.

We're still working on that, m'dawgg.

We had a very brief brainstorm on Jeff's couch today - it really just passed by. Probably faster than I could keep up, but I didn't let on because I don't want Jeff an Charles to know I'm stupid (they don't read these comments, do they?).

But we *do* have some ideas in the works already, and between now and the time I actually move into the C9 buildilng (around mid October), we'll have more ideas generated.

Also, it's about what *you* want, you know?

Is there something you people would like to see? We were talking about the possibility of me doing a weekly show - I have some ideas in this area, but I'd love to hear some feedback from the community on what's important to you.

This is good stuff.

I'll *definitely* continue doing screencasts. It's just in my blood to give talks.

As for the other ideas - I certainly like them. In the meantime, we could just do what we did in the old DnR days and have an IRC room (if that's OK with the powers that be).

The only problem I foresee is a live feed - not sure if they'd let me get away with that Expressionless

But trust me - I've seen the team in Think-Mode, and we're going to come up with some great stuff this year. No doubt.

While I honestly do appreciate the compliment, we have to remember that this isn't a person vs. person thing. Scoble is Scoble and does what a Scoble does (Scobles?).

I'm a Rory, and I Rory.

We're very different, but we're both driven by a desire to share cool technology in interesting ways.

So, no Scoble bashing Smiley He's a good guy, and he's done a lot for *many* of us in this industry. I know I got many hits from him back in the day when I had just started blogging, and it helped greatly. When he links now, I get some traffic, but it's mostly just, "Hey - he still knows I'm alive!" and it makes me feel good.

So, yeah - compliment definitely received, but let's remember that this isn't a Scoble-replacing thing. A cool thing about C9 is that everybody is crazy in a different way, and we all (C9 crew of the past and future) have/will add/added (hey - this is getting complicated Smiley ) their own touch.

Scoble's will be missed Expressionless

Look... I don't want to give away the big secret to getting jobs, but...

Well... you helped me out (by doing what "had" to be done), so I'm going to help you out.

Basically, insulting the people who could potentially, eventually, maybe get you jobs...

...isn't the best way to get them.

It's funny. It reminds me of an MSDN Event I did where I had a heckler in the audience who was slamming me with all sorts of MS vs. OSS garbage. Nothing relevant to the presentation at all. Just the rudest little dufus.

Then, after the show, he actually approached me, handed me his business card, and asked if I could possibly get him a job at Microsoft, at which point he started listing off all his qualifications.

I don't think I threw the business card away in front of him, but it was gone before I left the building.

Just for the record, I don't wear steel-toed boots. I was actually going to remove my $500 pair of Tod's and kick you in the nuts with my Hugo Boss casuals. You don't deserve to be kicked in the nuts by a pair of Tod's.

You don't know what any of that means, but you'll learn quickly that being kicked in the nuts by a flaming metrosexual is no different from being kicked in the nuts by a posterchild of machismo such as yourself.
