    Yes! Vindication, Amigos!

I must say, I saw this day coming. The proposed future of Rory's career didn't sound at all pleasing, but now the truth is out. Rory, best of luck to you and all that you do. Us niners will truly appreciate the path you have chosen to take, and thanks to The Sandman (Jeff), and Chazz for their support in your big transition.

    Alright !!

rory I hope your greatness will really make "9" Great Smiley

the live shows were a big draw to me on DNR, in fact now that they have stoped my viewing of DNR has dropped....

    Stargate is cool.... Wink

Get the Ori and the Wraith to take-on each other and have the replicators take on the winner!

but then we would have to invent a new enemy! Smiley
  • Yeah, this is the right place for you Rory!

Congrats to Channel9 on this "catch"!

Q: Can you talk to someone in MS do some productivity improvements in unmanaged world (C++)? I now that .net is red-hot - but a lot of developers still have to use C++, and working with C# and watching it evolve makes C++ world look very gray with it's horrible sound-to-noise ratio. Even pre-compiler form MS-specific-C++ to standard C++ would be nice.

We're looking at doing this exact thing.  In addition to regular C9 style interviews, Rory most likely will do a weekly show too.  Not sure if that will be Audio/Video or both.

Very exciting times ahead for C9!

What is "the old google thing" ?

    I want Rory to first:

    1. Do more .NET Screencasts
    2. Build a c9 chatroom for the niners
    3. Do a weekly program on general development material
Maybe 1 and 3 can be merged...And once he's finished with all that, then he can get to whatever else you other niners want him to do...be generous with the Rory, puff puff pass..don't hog'em.

Yeah, I noticed that. Hummingbird mode is kind of normal for him. Maybe the pelvic thrusting is setting him up to be the Microsoft Duffman.

So, ah, what's wrong with stargate sg-1? Rory, you haven't lived until you've gone to an ancient egypt exhibit with friends/family and explained every exhibit in the context of the show. I spent a day at a museum with family doing that, and they had never seen the show and thought I was seriously nuts. Their young kids actually started to believe me.

For some strange reason, I want to see Rory interview Bill Hill. I don't quite know why, but it just popped into my head. Either they'll get along great, or Rory will end up going on a "nature walk" and not coming back. Either way it'll make for great video. Tongue Out

Ok, enough of my attempts at inane rambling. Have fun Rory, we'll miss you on the events circuit. BTW do you know who will replace you? Please tell me it won't be some boring corporate wonk.
  • CharlesCharles Welcome Change

Re: Scoble stuff... Scoble is a C9 founder and is the most prolific interviewer in our short history.

Rory will bring himself into Channel 9 and add his specific ingredients to the soup.

I stressed that Rory is not a replacement for Scoble simply because that would make it seem like we were actually looking for a replacement for Scoble. In fact, we were looking for someone new. A different voice. A fresh perspective.

And, I'm now free to really go off the Going Deep end Smiley

I'm really excited to have another full time interviewer (actually, conversationist is the correct terminology for a Channel 9 video person) to work with.

Should be a fun, educational, and different year on C9.

Hey... we had to have some fun with this Smiley

Still, it was a good time. And I really am doing the clothing site blogging thing - but that's just for kicks.

Well, thank you very much for the welcome.

Seriously, I can't believe I got this job. When I was driving back to the airport tonight, I just kept thinking, "Wow... *nobody* deserves a job this cool."

I hope to deliver and make you people happy. When I got the notification that I had been accepted for the position, my world froze for a moment. I couldn't believe it. Still can't. It's... Just. Too. Cool.

And the people I've met in building 18 are all awesome. As someone who's been in the field, I really look forward to actually working in an office with people I see on a daily basis, and Charles Torre (my mentor and partner in crime), is just... yeah. Wow. He's really laid back, has a lot of ideas, and I'm just so lucky to be working with him.

I can also tell that Jeff is going to be quite the boss.

I could go on, but I'll save it for my own blog Smiley I simply met too many people who blew me away with talent. C9 is actually an impressively small team considering how much work gets done.

Anyway - onto the other comments.

But thanks again for the welcome to what I now consider "home" Smiley

I can't promise anything, but I can tell you this:

    1. In the interview, Charles said they couldn't fire me - I haven't checked with my attorney yet, but this might be legally bnding

    2. Jeff said I could whatever I wanted to be successful

    3. I have a company credit card

You do the math, my friend Smiley

Seriously, though, Jeff has stressed that C9 is like this weird things where if someone has an idea, and the idea's good...

    ...it just might happen.

So we'll see what happens this year. We've already chatted about a few ideas, and I expect to learn much more as I come on board.

You're making me nostalgic. Carl and I are probably better friends now than we were back in the DnR days, but I still miss doing that show. Thsoe Friday nights, hectically switching back and forth between IRC and our own DnR custom conferencing software - it was crazy. And fun. And what Carl's built is amazing.

We're still working on that, m'dawgg.

We had a very brief brainstorm on Jeff's couch today - it really just passed by. Probably faster than I could keep up, but I didn't let on because I don't want Jeff an Charles to know I'm stupid (they don't read these comments, do they?).

But we *do* have some ideas in the works already, and between now and the time I actually move into the C9 buildilng (around mid October), we'll have more ideas generated.

Also, it's about what *you* want, you know?

Is there something you people would like to see? We were talking about the possibility of me doing a weekly show - I have some ideas in this area, but I'd love to hear some feedback from the community on what's important to you.

As for the other ideas - I certainly like them. In the meantime, we could just do what we did in the old DnR days and have an IRC room (if that's OK with the powers that be).

The only problem I foresee is a live feed - not sure if they'd let me get away with that Expressionless

    Hey, Afred...

While I honestly do appreciate the compliment, we have to remember that this isn't a person vs. person thing. Scoble is Scoble and does what a Scoble does (Scobles?).

    I'm a Rory, and I Rory.

We're very different, but we're both driven by a desire to share cool technology in interesting ways.

So, no Scoble bashing Smiley He's a good guy, and he's done a lot for *many* of us in this industry. I know I got many hits from him back in the day when I had just started blogging, and it helped greatly. When he links now, I get some traffic, but it's mostly just, "Hey - he still knows I'm alive!" and it makes me feel good.

So, yeah - compliment definitely received, but let's remember that this isn't a Scoble-replacing thing. A cool thing about C9 is that everybody is crazy in a different way, and we all (C9 crew of the past and future) have/will add/added (hey - this is getting complicated Smiley ) their own touch.

    Scoble's will be missed Expressionless

    Again, though, thank you.

Look... I don't want to give away the big secret to getting jobs, but...

Well... you helped me out (by doing what "had" to be done), so I'm going to help you out.

Basically, insulting the people who could potentially, eventually, maybe get you jobs...

...isn't the best way to get them.

It's funny. It reminds me of an MSDN Event I did where I had a heckler in the audience who was slamming me with all sorts of MS vs. OSS garbage. Nothing relevant to the presentation at all. Just the rudest little dufus.

Then, after the show, he actually approached me, handed me his business card, and asked if I could possibly get him a job at Microsoft, at which point he started listing off all his qualifications.

I don't think I threw the business card away in front of him, but it was gone before I left the building.

Just a little anecdote to help illustrate the problem Smiley

You're saying that you started building your shrine room...

    WITHOUT CONSULTING ME?

I have a standard template that I send out to all devotees who choose to use the little-man-prostrate animation you used, and it's very exacting.

For example, where's the fountain going to go? The waterfall with my face carved in the side of the rock? The 40ft platinum statue of me, standing triumphantly over all I have beaten down with my infinite power?

No. You've made a terrible mistake.

    You are not worthy.

I am sorry. Truly, truly sorry.

    Bah!

    It's a habit I have from blogging.

Writing the post/doing the material is fun, but the good stuff comes when you get to talk with/fight against/threaten the people leaving comments. That's the reward for posting something Smiley

Great video. We literally filmed, encoded, then published this video. Charles, Jeff, and Rory swung by with a camera and hung out as I ripped and encoded it before sending it thru our video encoding process.

And the tool you wrote is very slick.

I was worried I'd have to learn something new in coming on board with this team, but you pretty much did away with that assumption.

    Nice.

  • Great !

Rory, you coul'nd find any better job.

So why don't you try your camera on the XNA Express Team ? Where there're funny people with interesting things to show...
  • ZeoZeo Channel 9 :)

    Wow! 9 team this rocks!

XNA is actually something I'm going to go after - and that includes XNA Express.

So that ought to make you happy Smiley

    Brother Rory,

I'm sorry...the ceiling is only eight feet high in my house. Unless I can raise donations for a new roof, it'll have to go in the backyard next to the plastic flamingos.

In the mean time, I have some ideas for you here...maybe they will help.

I also will be issuing a new message shortly, Vista willing, that will bring hope and encouragement to all those fighting our noble battle.

    Hi Rory !

I'm not up to speed yet on your story, I've only just discovered your blog so please forgive me.

It can be a little mad around here, plenty of signal and plenty of noise, one's thing for sure you'll learn lots and meet some really nice positive people ... I know I have thanks to C9.

    Anyway, a very warm welcome.

    Dave
  • You guys have to shoot another one of these videos. Have Scoble climb into a Tardis/blue police box one last time and then show Rory coming out of it. Sort of like a Dr. Who regeneration. Be sure to add cool sound effects. And please don't put a stalk of celery on your suit, Rory. Have a long scarf and a bag of jelly babies or something.
  • This was an awesome interview. I can't wait to see what Rory can produce!!!

And, for the record, SG1 rules, so step off Charles!!!
  • Omg, I'm out of the loop for a -few days- on business and Rory is moving into C9.  This is going to be a lot of fun -- always loved listening to Rory from the early .NET Rocks days Tongue Out

Congrats Rory on the new position as I think you'll fit in nicely here.  Looking forward to your C9 contributions =)

    -Travis

  • Yo, congrats Rodawg!

I'm glad you didn't leave Microsoft, I was a bit worried you were going to move to New York or Michigan, or even New London :O

C9 just got a little better...

That's a great idea, but I'm hurt you'd ever even think that I'd be the celery-toting Who.

If anything, right now, I'd be (in order of preference):

    1. David Tennant

    2. Chris Eccleston

    3. Tom Baker

    Yeah. For serious.

Ian Smith disagrees with me about number one here, but... I really like him. I thought I'd hate him, but he's turned out to be quite fabulous.

And I actually prefer both of the most recent doctors to Tom Baker's. I know it's almost blasphemy, but there you go. You don't get to pick whom you love. It just happens.

I have a different interviewing style from Carl, but I learned a lot from him, so expect some goodness Smiley

    (I hope.)

    Way to go, Man!

I know I'm late to the party, but congrat-dga-frickin-lations! I know you're going to do great things with Channel 9.

It's good to see creative and talented folks like you at the wheel of a great community like this. It's truly awesome.

I know you give me a lot of credit for the advancement of your career, but the world would have found you sooner or later. I feel like I just sped up the process a little.

I've said it before. You are a profoundly gifted writer and I'm proud to have known you when.

As for the .NET Rocks! Live feeds, they are coming back. Now that Geoff is back and able to manage that whole process we'll be able to do it again.

    Nerd out

    Uh. Yeah.

    It was all me...

'Cause I probably could have found some other show to be on with around 200,000 downloads per month Smiley

No problem. You did nothing for me, Franklin.

    NOTHING!

BTW - thanks to your little network of shows (including mine), I'm getting endless emails about whether I "Am" or I'm "Not" - I'm going to kick Miller in the nuts the next time I see him Smiley

See what I mean? Anyone who "wasn't" would simply open up a man-sized can of whoopass. I mean, is there seriously any doubt left in the world? On the other hand, someone who "is" -- that's the kind of guy who'll go straight for your nuts with a steel-tipped boot. And when contact is made, well, you're gonna look like this guy: Expressionless

Okay, so page 4 (till I showed my face) was built on nothing more than nut-kicking conversation between three really big names...so I had to pop my little head in and ruin for you all Wink

Carl, Keep up the great work, man. You have no idea who I am, but I'm #152,821 of your 200,000 downloads every month.

Just for the record, I don't wear steel-toed boots. I was actually going to remove my $500 pair of Tod's and kick you in the nuts with my Hugo Boss casuals. You don't deserve to be kicked in the nuts by a pair of Tod's.

You don't know what any of that means, but you'll learn quickly that being kicked in the nuts by a flaming metrosexual is no different from being kicked in the nuts by a posterchild of machismo such as yourself.

I'm warning you, Miller. You keep this up, and you're going to have a Prada shoe tread print permanently pressed on your cute little hiney.

    Big names?

A few people might recognize me at a .NET dev conference, but if I walk to the Starbucks across the street, I get treated like everybody else Smiley

Also, I'm very glad you're alive - while I get more "I like you mail" than "I hate you mail," the "I hate you mail" tends to leave a bigger, deeper impression. You've done nothing but make me comfortable around here, and I appreciate that in a big, big way.

You're also an active poster who isn't a troll, and for that, you just rock Smiley

Ah, decisions, decisions.... just too much for my pretty mind, it's hard enough to choose between DKNY and L'eau de Cartier 6am in the morning.

I go straight for the nuts but only when I play poker. I love taking pots with a queen high straight - that's completely normal poker talk, don't get any ideas, Mark "Misguided Missle" Miller.

And a small edit: Rory is a dandy, Millah, and you want to be one to but you're too lazy to put the required hours into it. Man, you're so lazy you created CodeRush to code with less effort, how lazy can you get?
  • JazzynupeJazzynupe 9 Guy from the beginning
OK, I have to ask... How can we get those bean bag 9 Guy chairs?

Would it help if we were Blue badge?

    Come on Guys....Big Smile

Awesome move Rory. I knew you were making the change, now I have 3 places to read your ingenious thoughts. Maybe I'll be able to see through that psychodelic(?) world you see every day. Where things make total effing sense. Smiley
