Good luck to Mr. Scoble and his family in future endeavors. I've almost no activity in these forums, but I feel compelled to say that I have enjoyed the rawness of his interview style and his lack of fear when discussing real issues that exist with Microsoft
as a company and a social ecosystem.

Channel9 will continue to thrive and be a great resource, but it would behoove successors to seek out a level of deference to the "grassroots" mission of Channel9 that Scoble clearly espoused.

I hope Charles keeps doing that, for just that reason, by the way.

I discovered later that that is a good way to start a conversation on video since the viewer has no idea who they are seeing and why they are or aren't important to be listening to.
posted by RobertScoble

Nah, there wasn't an IP checking state - We all know it's Scoble...no need for Charles to check the IP addresses. Plus, even if they were two different addresses, that still probably wouldn't have deterred Charles from reissuing Scobles account - simple because
IP's are not set in marble.

Anyway, I just meant the post to be fun and give this thread a mitnick-ish feel

posted by jsampsonPC

about the 'me' culture.

Scoble - it's a shame you've left MS, but good luck with Podtech any anything else you do in the future.

posted by Pimp Daddy

Maybe this will prove that one person can make a difference at Microsoft, I know the rest of the team will continue to do there best, but I can not help the feeling channel 9 has lost apart of its “taste”. I know I don’t post a lot but I almost hang onto
everything said on C9 and I believe Scoble made me think that way ( I know it sounds weird but I can’t really explain it in text) some how he made me think I have been visiting the site for years on my first hit. But I truly believe if we give the new guys
a chance, it will be best for both parties

It didn't keep me from talking about the iPod though.

A chance connection was my introduction to Robert and Channel 9.
Re: Scoble: Exit Stage Left

NOTE: c9 webforms dont seem to parse text very well: they dont recognize implicit para=CRLF nor do they recognize explicit html tags

...... annoying to submit ONE BIG BLOCK OF TEXT -- what's wrong with you guys: even your websites are broken!!! -------------- i'm new to mr.scoble's gig (i watched about 40 of the videos over the long weekend!). And as an avowed 'hostile' of microsoft,
i must say that scoble forced me to have an open mind. So that's an accomplishment, i think! yes, some interviews (by him and some by others) were totally lame (because the guest had nothing to say); and some were a bit fawning (not asking the obvious questions).
but i was just as often impressed as i was nonplussed: the new vista heap manager; avalon -finally put in perspective by wallent; the os/2|cairo back-story (Zbikowski was poignant and sometimes painfully honesty); even the WIN CE enabled fridge (a blatantly
self-conscious stunt just to promote a tool) -- scoble me interested enough to go and look at the other interviews on c9. however, one of the most telling signs was in the exit interview: his son's comments: each time the question of what it was that captured
the imagination, scoble's son was very clear about where the momentum is going: apple. I think it was great that his son was there to give his dad a reality-check! ---- the acorn does not fall from the tree (after all, that's been his dad's job at C9). but
the fact that scoble (still) thinks that the reason for the ipod's success is 'fashion' (as opposed to function) suggests that he still doesn't "get it". What's wrong with microsoft is NOT that it has superior engineering products that are somehow under-marketed
(LOL) - rather just the opposite! Microsoft has a has long sad history of shipping product that is mediocre or worse & then using hype (when not abusing its market-power!) to shamelessly shill terribly awful junk that is either 2nd-rate or else a poor derivative.
The ipod (or any other well-designed product -- which is the broader point that i think scoble misses) is about a commitment to excellence; the exquisite beauty of seeing every intricate detail incorporated into a coherent, harmonious whole. That simply is
not part of the microsoft gestalt (though it must be said to bill gate's credit: if at first he fails, he tries tries tries again - even if it takes 10 or 15 years to get it right. Almost no other company in the world is so unafraid of failure!) nonetheless,
the fact that scoble has been out there -- showing how vista might represent the first credible attempt by microsoft top produce a serious OS (cairo & taligent died en route; nextstep survived to become os/x) -- has been a real treat. He let the guys speak
for themselves (even if there were a few too many program managers & not enough architects & coders) ... and he did this without beating us over the head with the normal parade of lies (one part dissimulation, and two parts dissembling) that the microsoft
PR machine (and its minions in the trade press) normally inflict upon us. that is a real accomplishment: to open up closed minds of people like us who thought that microsoft was a incorrigible reprobate; a corporate recidivist that had not learnt any lessons
despite being convicted of cyber crimes in nearly every court around the world; that had neither atoned nor been properly punished for its atavistic behavior (eg: broken up + heavily fined for both the opportunity cost of all the innovation it prevented, as
well as the external cost that all of its crashing/malware had inflicted on its customers). a job is like mr. scobble's is really hard to do: how to be an apologist (in the best sense of the word) without being a syncophant. When the next american president
is thinking about a White House Press Secretary, robert scoble's name should make the short list! Defnding the undefendable is a tough gig. For people in this part of the audience -- from the skeptics to the outright hostiles -- scoble provided us with clubable
entertainment, even if not always deep insight. Not quite fanboy but also not quite sage. That may sound like being damed with faint praise, but it's not. It's real appreciation for his sincerity & (perhaps most of all) for having a sense of humour. cheers:

I was thinking more along the lines of the Tour Guide of MS. Great honest interview Charles!

posted by Windmiller

Re: Scoble: Exit Stage Left

 Hi scoble !
It's fun: I just left my company here in Germany at the same time and I also was sad because some dreams didn't come true during the time I was there. But new opportunities are still waiting - I'm sure of that.

Microsoft as an "ecosystem" was a black box for me until I watched the first 9er video of you ! The only I knew about MS is a new administration building of MS in the north of Munich, Germany and of course a bunch of software that accompanied me since the early
90ties: FoxPro, VB,VBA, Access and now the .NET Framework with C# and that stuff. My professional existence is built on MS products and their reliabilty to my customers.

But I never had an idea about the guys behind the scene at microsoft. So your videos are like a window in the MS world to me.

Your videos, especially your "exit" - video, has pointed out important things to me: At first MS do have employees that stand for their dreams and there - obviously - is an open culture to communicate about pretty cool - even non MS related - ideas - like Ipods.
Second from here I now can associate excellent and productive products with faces of MS devs, pm's and so on.

The man behind the cam did express the fear that the image of MS that customers do have could be damaged but that is the direct opposite. Your videos give MS a human face to the customers and as far as I'm concerned the relationship to MS is tighter than before
your videos.

Of course MS is looking for excellent people around the world but it doesn't matter whether they are wearing shorts in top management or which colour they do have or what background they do have.

Your videos beyond the MS related stuff give very interesting insights to me: Because I never was in the U.S. and the image I got over the years is built on US movies, soaps and so on. The dialogs in your videos are so real that I not also updated my knowledge
about software but also how MS organized the worklife. Your walk over the campus to the interview with Steve Balmer show me the architecture of the building or the great view to large trees and excellent park surroundings. Greenly I meant the guys at MS are
working in a cube farm but they are organized in individual office cells that are furnished in a very private way. I was really delighted about that !

So I wish you a big deal at your new job in Palo Alto !

Thanks a lot !
Alex
Munich, Germany

posted by anuproject
