Windows "Longhorn" Server Beta 3 shipped a little while ago (a couple hours or so ago) and we got the special opportunity to capture the last three sign-offs on the ship process (lots
of people have to sign off on a release this big before it ships). Not many outsiders get to bring a video camera into Windows Ship Room, but we're not outsiders! Plus, Iain is a friend of ours.
Here, we chat with Iain McDonald, Director, Windows Server Team and Alex Hinrichs, the guy who rules the LHS Ship Room. We chat about the key new ingredients in our next server OS and take a small tour of the
campus en route to Building 26 (Windows Planet) from building 43 (Windows Moon).
It's always fun to talk to Iain. He's one of those personalities at Microsoft that make it fun to work here. He's also a long time veteran of shipping Windows.
This is a big day for Windows Server. Congratulations to all involved with making and testing it out in the real world.
Enjoy!

Real Cool Video!
Was cool to see the sign off process/party.
It's not easy to walk and talk and carry a video camera
Glad you liked it! Was fun to shoot!

MS just rocks!.
Very good and realistic video. The walk through the campus was really good! transparency cannot get any better than this!
Very good work Longhorn Server Team!
Congratulations!

Can we get some screen shots of Beta 3?

Great video
My ears perked up when you mentioned NAP as it consistently gets killed by Data Execution Prevention every time my Vista laptop starts.
Geekiest ceremony ever, kinda needs some sort of huge altar and a mystical product key. You would never sign off on a software product like that in a film.
Good video, you may need a bigger launch room.
Does this, pray, have anything to do with that thread that has been a sticky in the coffeehouse for a while now? If so, sounds good...
Am I going crazy, or did somebody at the end of the video really mention something about a guy who has a golden toilet in his office?
And thanks once again for bringing us an inside look at something so important as release shipping!
I've downloaded this morning and tried to installed (all previous betas have installed OK) on VPC2007 and I get the following error.
Windows cannot open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are avaiable, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570.
Congrats guys
I love the comment about a larger room - thats the room we used for war room (oops we had to change the name to ship room...) forever going back at least to nt4. So there is a little history in there & it is one of the biggest rooms on campus.
as for the setup error - it sounds like your copy was not correct - some of the files are missing.
as for getting the beta - go to http://www.microsoft.com/getbeta3

p.s. yes a bloke named scott graf has a bunch of golden things in his office because he was obsessed with gold member form the austin powers films. That & he used to roller skate around in gold shorts.
Microsoft must be a magical place to work at.
I'm a little puzzled to know how this Server operating system differs materially from and is better than its predecesor, Windows 2003 Server. Can someone point me to the relevant PowerPoint presentation? Thanks.
Well, we do know that there is a non-GUI option that cuts out redundant software to permit deployment of key technologies without inadvertently turning on infection vectors.
What else?
