Channel 9 - First Look at Arc Touch Mouse

I stopped by the hardware team to take a first look at the new
Arc Touch Mouse, and shot this short video. The Touch folds flat, to about the same size as an HTC Touch phone. Where the old Arc Mouse fit well in a front pocket, the Arc Touch will do well in a back pocket. The folding portion of the mouse has 90 articulated
pieces and snaps to a very solid feeling and natural arc. Between the bottons, a touch strip allows you to scroll or flick through your Windows, or touch the top or bottom of the strip to Page Up/Down. This refresh includes haptics, so you can actually feel (and hear) the page scrolling and BlueTrack so the Arc will
track on almost any surface. The dongle for the Arc Touch is the very slim profile dongle as was used on the

Arc Keyboard. If you'd like to see some of what goes in to developing a mouse, see
this video on the design of the original Arc.

Pretty cool. I'm curious if you can get away with just using one dongle if you have both Arc Keyboard and Arc Touch Mouse?

I was pretty upset with the coverage at some mainstream tech blogs. They seemed to suggest this was derived from MSR's "Mouse 2.0" project. There is no multitouch here so I don't know why they continue to push that myth.

Interesting, I wanted to assume it was BlueTrack but then I prefer not to actually assume so that's good to know. I was also unaware of the haptic feedback which is pretty cool.

Thanks for the video.

It is not a multitouch mouse, that was over speculation by over speculators.

@staceyw: The team seemed to be very proud of this one, they'll be happy to read the comments here. The mouse does have a paired dongle for ease of use (which, btw, is incredibly easy to use) so you can't piggy back a keyboard and mouse on one dongle. I've
given the team that feedback in the past and they had heard it before so it's on the wish list. Thanks

Hey guys, great work on the mouse, it really looks nice. Congratulations. I have a (Microsoft) Bluetooth 5000 myself, and I got an Arc for my gf. I would love to carry the Arc with me, but the one major thing that prevents me from using some other mouse
is always the lack of bluetooth. What's up with that?

I really don't have a clue as why bluetooth mouses are so rare in numbers. Logitech's bluetooth are old and, well, ugly, and my 5000 pales when compared to my GF white arc. Could channel9 give me (and I bet others) some insight on this?

Anyway, congratulations, I'll get one for my girl, and wait for the bluetooth version for me

I'll ask around for you. If I had to guess, I'd say bluetooth uses more juice than many would like. For me, most of the machines I use my Arc on don't have BT, and the last dongle I got from DealExtreme didn't work on Windows 7. I think the key here was
for mobility users who want it to work every time without anything other than popping the Arc open.

Cool thanks for digging on this.

Well, I have to be honest, I don't recall one laptop or "netbook" from any of my friends or coworkers not having built-in bluetooth. As for a desktop, I would agree totally. My laptop with 2 usb ports really enjoys bluetooth, and it works on a similar way,
just turn on the laptop and the mouse is ready to go.

As for battery, could be, but my Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 handles 1-2 months with >8 hours per day of use with 2 Duracell 1000Mha rechargeable. I'm happy with it =), of course if I could have more, it would be great.

I always thought it would be something related to costs, but maybe it's the process of pairing devices that it's a bit scary for the masses (and so the just pop and go would work great)?

In my happy land, I would be able to flip a nice small switch under the mouse, and I would be able to use with bluetooth or with the MS dongle. =)
