Eric Horvitz spends his time at MSR developing advanced ideas for time and resource management. His work automates the prioritization of tasks by monitoring the formatting of emails (and eventually the voice-print of voice-mails). His software even uses his digital camera to watch how he moves in his office, so his machine can learn by literally watching him work! His Life Browser tools give us a peek at the sort of software that might give all of us our own [virtual] executive assistant.

  • Did you guys catch the part where Dr. Horvitz tells us that his voice mail will be determining the importance of his messages based on the tones and speed of his callers voice? How awesome is that? But imagine if we all had that-- all my messages would be like "OHMYGOD LAURA YOU HAVE TO CALL ME BACK ITS SOOOOOOOO IMPORTANT!!!!!"  haha.

Poor Ben Stein, no one will ever return his calls.

That's awesome Smiley  Sounds like an idea for a new segment...

Talk about artificial intelligence! Wow, that was pretty impressive. What do the 3 camera views underneath the main one do? Allowing a software to have such control over you is slightly creepy, but you can see how those with very busy schedules could really benefit from this. I liked the number system as a means of identifying a message´s priority. Interesting, thanks.

That is some remarkable software!  Computers that prioritize and document your life...wow.  My only concern is that we might become overly dependant on the computers to keep track of our lives.  God help us if the computers crash!  Anyway, Eric is simply brilliant!  All those patents and very articulate - I can't help but feel a little intimidated by him...and I've never even met him.  Great segment Bill and Laura.

    Prioritize your emails lately?  Hehe.
