never understood the fascination with these "games", to be perfectly honest.... but i guess i'm in the minority. heh.

That's what I love about SL is that it evolves... Now I gotta go install Hay bales for Laura's hoedown.
Ping me in world, I'm Spin Martin. And don't forget to pick up a free t-shirt and some other schwag for your avatar.

If anybody sees a dork who doesn't know what he's doing named Codi Ng, that's me!
Geeez where on earth could I have time to do a 2nd life. I'm short about 8 hours every day to do what i want to do in my current life. Well I never will be a girl then in my second life. To bad but maybe to good to be true.
I admire the creativity behind the whole setup and the great possibilities the user are given. I hope they have better politicians there. And what about cops, crime, sex and drugs and alcohol. hmmmmm.... Maybe I need a second life after-all. Now I think about it, it could double the fun.

I "was a resident" (dont say played!) for a while last year. I hear it's soooo much bigger now. I still login to the SL webpage occassionally to see if anyone on my friends list is online at the moment and there are a LOT of people that have been residents for years.
I even (almost accidentally) made a couple of hundred REAL US dollars with some land that I purchased in a new expansion and sat on for a while trying to dream up something to do with it. Then I sold it and made a ton of Lindens.
The in-game tools and scripting was surprisingly powerful.
If you are curious, I'd highly recommend you check it out.

A link to this cast has been added to the SL forums, so beware of traffic!

Yeah, I'm right there with ya. I had no clue about "second life" till i saw something about it on Scobles blog the other week!
Sounds kinda cool, but i have never been able to really enjoy those kinds of games, I'll still check it out....sometime.

Mix is still going on and I'm still in Vegas...shooting...not boozing (sadly).
I hope to get the MIX segment up by the end of this week or early next week LATEST.
Shooting while you're while your boozing...There's next week show for you!
Nice.

Interesting, but I seem to get bored after a while with this type of sim projects. I like the idea of creating/designing your own space though......Will give it a go.
BTW, I like how our lovely ladies point at things below when refering to stuff on the site. Cute.

This is my 6th day in second life, Good fun. !
Im shocked how people think its real life, and the mature content is hilarious.
(I seen a master chief in the game the other day)

SL sounds awesome. MMO is the future of videogames and as the technology gets more advanced...more people will take vacations from the real world, into the virtual world, more than ever before.
Allowing the user to customize their virtual world is fantasitc. Gamers of The Sims and MMO gamers, I bet, will really like SL.
I'm interested in becoming a SL 10 resident.
It's only a matter of time, until we will get to live in the (real) "Matrix" (only without the machines and Neo).
BTW, I think it would be cool if 10 SL residents were to make short films in SL and post them, here, for others to view.

I took a spin in second life and after nosing around a bit I realized that it would take a lot more of the time I never have enough of to get fully involved.
It's tempting to install it again just to play on the 10 island (and maybe figure out how to build an orcmid), but I think I'd better stay away. Thanks for the cool introduction, though. Well, I could probably install it just enough to look around, you know, just for a quick peek ...

What's trippy is all the actually RL stuff in there... like replicas of the French Quarter or various downtown areas. The hybrid events interest me the most... streaming into SL something that's happening in RL and vice versa.

I like walking around heavily armed with invisible weapons in a bathrobe. Makes people nervous.

Ever wonder if the you-own-your-content model, ie., DIY content, is something that makes Second Life the disruptive technology for the video game industry in like 5 or 10 years.
Don't like HALO? Make your own. Sounds vaguely like blogging and such.
I just wrote a post on SL, without mentioning SL until the last minute. As an application, it's wild and people would think you'd be nuts if you said you were gonna build it:

I only just started hanging out in Second Life, but its a blast. Does Tina play? I seriously need to hook up with my goddess there and build her a shrine.

I tend to prefer games with more structure to them. I need a mission to complete or something...but thats just me. BTW nice shot with the sticky gun Laura.

If you are going to build something, there is no better foundation than Tina Wood and Laura Foy. Good to see you two working again!

They are supposed to be. If you watch the "What is on10" video on channel9.msdn.com they repeat over and over and over ... ahem... where channel9 is for those who want to know the technology behind everything, 10 is for those who want to know the people. Or something like that

I don't believe in paying for a game after you've bought it, so MMORPGs are out for me. I also don't believe in paying real money for virtual assets, that goes way back to some MUDs where you cuold buy equipment for your character with real money. Never understood the trade in Diablo 2 items either.

The island is deserted! I know it's only 9am SL time, but come on people WAKE UP! lol

The traditional approach in SL is to earn/spend Lindens... not spend real money to BUY Lindens. You certainly are not required to spend any money at all! There is a free basic account (can't own land and I think some other restrictions).
However, I think you are talking about two different topics in your post.... 1) spending money to buy things you didn't "earn" in the traditional way, and 2) spending money for a subscription-based game. There have been way too many cycles spent debated both all over message boards. #1 has been beat to death all over message boards. #2 is just whether you think it's worth it or not! I'm struggling with you tieing this somehow to something you "don't believe" in.
Mainly I just wanted to point out that SL does NOT require you spend ANY money.

Oh that was you who gave me the tip about opening the box last night. My guy likes the T-shirt. I want to know where you got that great "Minority Report" effect when you were doing something before you flew off.

Been exploring SL for a little while now and it has almost limitless possibilities. I've even built and sold a few scripted objects using the LSL scripting language. This is much more than a "game" as people tend to think of MMOs.

Just curious how this isn't just like ActiveWorlds, which has been around for at least TEN YEARS. Other than being competition for AW, what's actually new about SL?

I'm an active Second Life member (Currently over a year old) and the difference between the two is that with Second Life you and the people on the game with you control the content... It's not limited to anything other than try not to make the other guy mad while you fiddle... I've seen it all from Virtual "ladies" to Nuclear Weapons to beautiful weddings... I even make a small income in Second Life which is also very different from Active Worlds... That and everything you make is intantaneous... IE with Active World's it has to be submitted... Well with Second Life if you can think it and dream it then you can probably make it... It literally is a Second Life...
