Microsoft's open source forge CodePlex has just turned 3 years old and passed the auspicious milestone of 10,000 active projects (actually 11,025 at time of filming).

We thought this would be a good time to sit down with Sara Ford - Agile Program Manager for CodePlex - and recap on the past three years, CodePlex's current feature set and what's in store for the future.

    Happy birthday CodePlex! You really came a long way! Smiley The early CP was just horrible and I couldn’t agree more with you Sara on not being able to describe the horribleness Wink

    I like your deployment cycle. It’s very unusual for MS product (if I may describe CP like that) to release new features to customers so often. I hope this spreads to some more MS projects very soon Smiley

    I wish code plex had a "best of" feature.

    Most of the projects on codeplex are barren wastelands with no new code drops, forum threads, or bug entries.

    I know you're trying to address this, but where are some of the best forum posting, code drops, or bugs?

    I've looked at the ratings feature as you mentioned in the video...but the rating feature is pretty arbititary.

    Where are some examples of really good projects or projects that the codeplex team likes?

    They show new releases and most downloaded on the main page. They could have a "most active" section like SF.NET has though.

    Any chance of Bazaar or Git support? Smiley

  • figuerresfiguerres ???

    seems to me like the few times i wanted to report problems with projects the codeplex site was not really god for that.

    i had to find an ms person who was part of the project and tell them i had filed like 3 bugs ... the bugs sat there w/o my getting any questions or comments. also searching the bug tracker seems weak, over time i saw several other bugs there that related to my bugs but no way to say "hey all 15 reports are related and might be fixed all at one time"

    or a way to just link them ... see #,#,#,#  (list of related bug reports)

    somethings like that.

  • Hey dude i have some prob in my appliction any one can help me out .application is having webservice reporting server whenever i run the report it is throwing an error like this.

    ex:

    at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall)
       at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters)
       at WebServiceReporting.Ratbert.ReportingService.ListChildren(String Item, Boolean Recursive) in c:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\vsarpmweb45\c2aae517\2acefd8f\App_WebReferences.0.cs:line 888

  • Can I search the source code stored at the CodePlex site?  Often times I need to see samples of how a class or method is used and have a hard time searching the web for that.   Dead projects would be useful for the purpose of providing code samples.

    Hi,

    I work with CodePlex and the thing amazes me is the integration between TFS (I guess it's TFS behind), Visual Studio and the web portal.

    I was wondering if Microsoft was considering to do a Cloud Service, something like a "TFS Service" or a "CodePlex Service" where we could have the equivalent of a CodePlexe portal but in a more private fashion, in order to host private development project.

    Is that something being talked about at the moment?

    Cheers,

    Vincent-Philippe

  • Hi all, Sorry for the delay in me responding. i've been speaking at TechEd Australia all week. Just getting a chance now.

    @Zeo:

    1. if you see abandoned projects, contact me directly with the URLs. We scan for abandoned projects once a month. Maybe they are still relatively new projects or we're missing them. We're always looking for suggestions to tweak our abandonment criteria.

    2. I'd love to hear ideas how to improve the ratings feature. Rating the individual releases seems to be the best approach i've come across.

    3. If you like WoW, you're going to love Rawr and Tweetcraft. If you are an AJAX developer, you'll want to check out the AJAX Control Toolkit. What i'm discovering from my "codeplex" search in TweetDeck is that there's a popular project for each niche. I see that Nic has left you with a list that i provided him before i jumped on the plane for #auteched.

    @figuerres:

    1. We recently implemented new features to improve the Issue Tracker to receive notifications via email. Back in April, we added the ability for an user to get an email whenever an issue they were tracking was updated or had a new comment. Just last month, we added the ability for a project owner or any other user to subscribe at the project-level to get an email notification for new Issues, new comments, and status changes. I'm hoping these new features will help project owners respond to issues in a timely manner.

    2. I like the idea of related bugs. Could be interesting.

    @SteveRichter

    have you tried http://www.koders.com/ yet?

    Thanks again everyone for watching the video. Always feel free to contact me via blog, email, or twitter (@saraford).
