How often do you get out of the shower and think,.. that song I just made up whilst washing my hair was AWESOME!! ...I wish I has some way to record it on my PC so that I can launch my music career on Myspace and get my own reality TV show on MTV2!?!@? Ahem,..
Well now you can write and record your own songs without the need to play an instrument thanks to Microsoft Research's Songsmith.
All you need is a PC, a microphone (the built in mic on your laptop will work), a melody and some lyrics. Songsmith will record what you sing into the microphone, analyze what you've sung and then assign the rhythm section and chords. You can adjust the style (genre) and tone until you find something you like and then output the track as a WMA file, movie maker project or backing track.
Check out the video for a full demo from the guys behind the software plus the worldwide debut of MY latest hit single "Room with Max".

This would be a really cool app to integrate somehow into the Zune social.  I can imagine community ratings of user creations.  And to top it off, perhaps find a way to use those Lips microphones on a PC.  That would be a very fun combo.

Great idea,.. or perhaps even port it over to Xbox 360 entirely!? Smiley

Hehe. The last bit was funny. I also found it funny how Dan Morris keeps nodding his head all the time. Smiley

I liked the name MySong better. Had more of a ring. Songsmith seems neat. Maybe Microsoft should create professional audio recording software?

Dan and Sumit are always bopping along - I would too if I got to make music all day! Smiley
