How do I download the videos?
- To download, right click the file type you would like and pick “Save target as…” or “Save link as…”
Why should I download videos from Channel9?
- It's an easy way to save the videos you like locally.
- You can save the videos in order to watch them offline.
- If all you want is to hear the audio, you can download the MP3!
Which version should I choose?
- If you want to view the video on your PC, Xbox or Media Center, download the High Quality WMV file (this is the highest quality version we have available).
- If you'd like a lower bitrate version, to reduce the download time or cost, then choose the Medium Quality WMV file.
- If you have a Zune, WP7, iPhone, iPad, or iPod device, choose the low or medium MP4 file.
- If you just want to hear the audio of the video, choose the MP3 file.
Right click “Save as…”
- Mid Quality WMV (Lo-band, Mobile)
- WMV (WMV Video)
Things have changed a lot around Channel 9. As you may have noticed, some people have come and gone over the past year, and the team is very different from what it used to be.
Some would say it's much better. Others would say it's gone downhill, but those people are stupid, and they'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.
Along with changes to 9, we've also seen the rise of 10. We still aren't entirely sure what it is, but we've got some seriously talented people working over there.
One of those people is Jesse Lewin.
I've had many hallway conversations with the guy since starting here. We've talked shop, clothing, music - the normal stuff.
After several months, he started to tell me more and more about his life pre-Microsoft. I was surprised to learn that:
1. His father worked on the Mac "back in the day"
2. When he was a kid, he got to hang out with Steve Jobs with some regularity
3. He worked for Apple (always interesting to talk to people who've worked for Apple in some way)
4. He's met a bunch of uber famous people
5. He likes my shoes
He also worked for Engadget. The guy has quite the history, which is all the more surprising given how young he is.
Anyway, I love the man, and wanted to get him up on 9. While he isn't a dev, he is a geek, and he's my kind of geek. When you can go from chatting about Prada to Powerbooks, you're probably going to get along with me.
Hope you like the interview. It was certainly fun for me, and I plan on doing more interviews with the rest of the team. It's time all you people met the current generation of JeffSand evangelists...

But all interviews with Rory in them are unusual. However, since Rory is in many Channel 9 videos, unusual interviews have become the norm. That makes unusual Channel 9 interviews not unusual at all.
Or maybe I'll execute unethical scientists first... Nah, the nvidia lot will be easier to find.

Anyway, he didn't just meet Steve Jobs - he grew up around him. If I seemed surprised and excited, it's because I was surprised and excited.
Not that you wouldn't agree - you were just attacking to attack. Just wanted to make sure my feelings on the matter were clear.
Also, I didn't join Channel 9 to make you happy. I did it because it's a fun job. If it turns out that we're losing our audience because of these interviews, I'll step down without argument.
However, we've been posting record traffic for the past several months straight, so I'm not too worried

If all we ever did around here was post interviews with coders, it'd be little more than a watered-down tutorial site.
The point here is to get the human stories behind tech.
I love Jesse - he's a funny, intelligent guy. The conversations are great. His stories are great.
He has a lot of fantastic non-geek goodness about him, too, but I thought we did a good job of keeping it geek related.
It was also fun to talk about Apple. I dig Apple. I work for Microsoft, but I use tech from all over the place. I like to be able to chat about it.
So... thanks for not being a puddinghead.
Other than this particular vid I really enjoy your light hearted approach to interviewing.
I work in IT but am not a dev and therefore a lot of the content goes over my head by a few feet, none the less there is always something to learn and it's always a pleasure to listen to smart people talk with passion on their subject. Your approach to the interviews adds an extra dimension and balance.
Keep up the good work Rory, your efforts are appreciated.
One thing I would like to know is how did Jesse end up at Microsoft?
Jesse has yet to share with me the story of how he wound up here. There's been so much other stuff to talk about that we haven't gotten to it yet.
It's a good question, though, given his very non-MS background.
That's probably part of it - I think we go for people with varied backgrounds in the evangelism department. Kind of hard to talk about MS in relation to the competition if you don't know what the competition is.
He's a smart guy. We just had a good hour long discussion/argument about MS/Apple stuff - particularly in relation to Microsoft's efforts around reaching difficult audiences. He has a lot of good ideas. Some of the stuff just wouldn't fly here, but that's a Microsoft issue and not a Jesse Lewin issue. It'd be nice if we had more like him - then some of those ideas of his might actually get implemented.

I am not, for example, anywhere near sophisticated enough to be able to use a word like "petulantly" in a sentence.
Take a hike, yo. What you left wasn't criticism - it was just garbage. It was another very negative comments, and, as I've already said, it added nothing to the discussion.
Criticism is welcome - I'm always interested in learning what I can to get better at this job, but if someone like you comes along and just complains without suggesting a solution (you were really vague), then I'm naturally going to get pissed.

I've been in customer facing jobs for years now, and one thing I've learned is that there's a huge difference between someone insulting me and someone providing me with useful criticism.
I'm a human being - what "frankly amazes me" is the huge number of customers who think that they can insult us without repurcussions.
Yeah, it might get me fired one day, but I'll quit before I stop being myself. Partner, customer, whatever - that "the customer is always right" thing is a bunch of bull. I'm not your punching bag. If you treat me with disrespect, then I'll treat you in kind.

I think it is very interesting to see and hear what people, especially those with backgrounds as varied as Jesse's, are doing at Microsoft... makes me feel like I may have a shot after all someday.
I may be in the minority, but I for one would like to see more videos on some of the others on the teams we know - whom come to Microsoft with these mixed and sometimes odd backgrounds.
I thought you interrupted far too often. Breaking up the flow of the interview. When watching an interview, I prefer to be able to hear the interviewee, not the interviewer.
In addition, the interruptions were (to me) unfunny side comments that didn't add to the interview, and were frankly annoying.
Now, on the other hand, you could have stated in the first place that you didn't think the comment added anything or wasn't 'positive' criticism. I don't believe the solution in situations like that, is just to automatically accuse someone of trolling.
If you do get numerous postings which express similar sentiments, maybe there's a reason. I'd want to know why.
The topic on the interview was interesting, and what this guy had to say WAS interesting, just tone down on the remarks and seemingly drug-induced reactions and it'll be all good
Also add the fact I had to register to leave a comment was also annoying, and add bugmenot in the mix, and my tendency to push things around in most inappropriate of fashions, and there we go: I posted Whole Two Comments. It's lame, but I mean: big deal.
It's obvious I didn't care about the IP, but I was curious if someone with access to the logs will go and point it out...
