How do I download the videos?
- To download, right click the file type you would like and pick “Save target as…” or “Save link as…”
Why should I download videos from Channel9?
- It's an easy way to save the videos you like locally.
- You can save the videos in order to watch them offline.
- If all you want is to hear the audio, you can download the MP3!
Which version should I choose?
- If you want to view the video on your PC, Xbox or Media Center, download the High Quality WMV file (this is the highest quality version we have available).
- If you'd like a lower bitrate version, to reduce the download time or cost, then choose the Medium Quality WMV file.
- If you have a Zune, WP7, iPhone, iPad, or iPod device, choose the low or medium MP4 file.
- If you just want to hear the audio of the video, choose the MP3 file.
Right click “Save as…”
- MP3 (Audio only)
- Mid Quality WMV (Lo-band, Mobile)
- WMV (WMV Video)
Mike Nash is a corporate vice president in charge of Windows client operating systems product management. Previously, he ran the security team that created the new security systems and features in XPSP2. Charles got a chance to spend some time with him recently to have a very candid conversation about Windows Vista and to learn about Windows Vista SP1 (What’s in it? Will it contain lots of new features like XPSP2? Etc…). Of course, with Vista being out in the real world for several months, Charles wanted to get a sense of how the OS is doing in terms of adoption and, equally as interesting to an OS head, how are the new Vista subsystems doing (that is, is Vista proving to be as stable as we thought it was going to be, as secure? – the data from the Vista telemetry systems will answer these questions). For those in Connect, the beta is now online (confusing links but you'll eventually find your English / other language install)
Guessing, SP1 will RTM same time as Longhorn Server (since it's the same codebase, or atleast shared codebase)
It seems to be the vidoes Charles posts.
This video runs great so why can't all videos be posted using this bit rate the quality is great.

This doesn't make any sense. For one thing, this video was processed EXACTLY the same way the other videos you've complained about are processed. Second, it's a MULTI-BIT RATE encoded file (the server streams at various bit rates depending upn connection speed). Also, I processed this video, so it's not a Charles issue....
Further, the Download file was encoded at 512Kbs to support complaints from you an others regarding download file size (this complaint made perfect sense and we dealt with it immediately)
So, there is not much real information coming from you that may help us understand why you sometimes have problems receiving video streams. I wonder if it might just possibly have something to do with Internet connection issues......
Sorry for sounding irritated, but, frankly, I am. Do you understand what a streaming file is and how streaming multiple bit rate video files works?

Yeah, I was dissapointed there too. Although Charles did emphasise that he'd see Mike again soon, so.. who knows.

We will be providing high quality download files as well in the future (for each new post, not retro)
No, I am not an expert at streaming video.
All I know is I had no problems streaming video from channel 9 without pausing until recently.
The videos that have problems were videos that were really big.
My connection is fine as I have a download manager that I can see the download speed and it is as normal.
Something has changed to those videos that affects the ability of my bandwidth to avoid pausing.

Why call it a Release Candidate if you have no intention of actually releasing that version? It makes so sense.

That's a peculiar assertion... Where did the idea that the labels had all changed meanings come from?
Didn't WHS actually release their release candidate?
I'm not arguing the need for smaller downloads (and larger ones) and we will be providing both, but if you truly do find that all you want is the audio then note the WMA/MP3 links below the video... you can grab that and have a much smaller download.
It's not very encouraging that I can't find any reference to trustedinstaller.exe in the SP1 white paper, but perhaps it's covered by something else. Anyone who had the same issue able to confirm that it was fixed? Maybe someone from the team can comment on it?
There's a lot that is said through facial expressions, they're worth studying. I like having a video focused on the person being interviewed.
Well, unless it's a video of a marketer and then the only thing I learn is that the delivery dates aren't going to be met as they say "yes we'll have it to you on blah-blah date" and then scratch their nose.
I could literally feel my intelligence going down as Nash spoke. For those that have been waiting for SP1, keep waiting until SP2 comes out. Maybe by then these guys will get it. I'm thoroughly disappointed.
I've been recommending to my Enterprise (many 100,000+) customers to wait until SP1 before even considering upgrading considering all the problems. I will have to retract that recommendation. Nash even downplays this as nothing but a glorified Windows Update.
I'm probably one of the biggest Microsoft fanboys there is. The thought of owning an IPod makes my skin crawl. Nash sounds more like he's running for Mayor of Seattle rather than really trying to address issues (or even acknowledge that there are any issues for them to address). XP SP2 was beautiful. I never saw a blue-screen with SP2 that wasn't caused by hardware failure. With Vista, I see at least 1 a week.
The security guys went too far and they know it. Rather than admit it and fix it, they rather go down with a sinking ship saying "It was the right thing to do." If the purpose of this interview was to lower our expectations, mission accomplished.

Upgrading from xp to vista a few weeks ago I lost some of my heritage programs and had to buy new versions or substitutes and my HP all-in-one lost the ability to fax from the PC.
For me this was not progress but a costly mistake.
