You probably haven't heard of it, but you're also probably going to start hearing a
lot about it in the near future.

Popfly is being announced today - as I'm posting this, actually.

To keep it short and simple so you can get right to watching the video, Popfly makes it easy for non-devs to create web sites, mashups, and more.

Drag, drag, click - you've got a Flikr + Virtual Earth mashup.

You can even point and click your way to a Vista Gadget.

No kidding.

After watching our video, check out the
overview here and there is also
an article over on techcrunch.

Great video, popfly will realy rock when it comes out

One thing bothers me though - I am not that much of a web developer although I have some experiences, just not with ASP.NET/web services etc - I am kinda basic scripting lanuage+sql guy. So the question is - do I need IIS/Windows machine to run Popfly? Or
is it completely static content and you can run it from let's say OpenBSD with Apache/Lighttpd (that's what I would do) so everything is executed on client machine in a browser?
Where is it hosted/executed? Thx for answers

V4 is written on a completely different code base. That is the reason it's taking a while to complete... It's a monumental task and the dev team has been cranking really, really hard. It has nothing to do with Popfly support, though that's an interesting idea,

Does anyone else get the feeling someone sat down and said "Let's design the next-generation code hobbyst sharing site?"

Popfly - with it's Visual Studio integration, ease of creating gadgets and displaying data - looks like the perfect place to create a community of people built around Microsoft technology. Hell, it's obviously not aimed at the mainstream, and the Advanced View
to edit modules has some incredible power.

The team says they're working on allowing people to share Windows Forms programs, and I'll bet WPF is easy enough.

I am seriously impressed. It can grab amateurs, and has some features for more advanced users. The social element looks well thought-out and the ability to "Rip" mashups is, well, totally cool.

Gannotti: You've spent too much time working for Microsoft Something like that would be pretty cool though, particularly for Sales folks. It'd be a perfect complementry product to fold into Microsoft Dynamics.
posted by Michael Griffiths

LOL, you guys crack me up, I'm a guy (see my other C9 videos for "proof") and my voice isn't that high.

As this is C9, I'll give you some background. Suzanne Thompson is the Program Manager who works on things like user feedback, tutorials, screencasts, etc. Early on she started to do some demo screencasts and, although she has no professional voice training,
we thought she sounded like a Pro. Rather than use my inferior voice, we went with Suzanne for all of the videos.

For this actual video, I wrote a demo script for Suzanne to read aloud (with her edits of course) and we met up early this week to record on my laptop/account.

We used Camtasia for the screencase and she read the script aloud while I followed along "driving" the PC. In general it's easier to record the audio *after* the video.

In any case, I have not had a sex change operation
Going to be cool!! I admit, I prefer the fact that you can share projects around friends - could be very cool to see what everyone is working on quickly and easily.
posted by ben2004uk

This is awesome. I am and have been amazed at the level of innovation coming out of Microsoft over the last five years. I keep telling other developers that I know about the stuff you guys are doing and no one seems to really 'get' it. It seems like the
'stack' of all these great things is emerging as a cohesive whole for which you now have a platform to build amazing things like popfly. I would imagine that projects like this would only accelerate as the knowledge and creative ideas around what can be done
with these new technologies begins to proliferate throughout the company.

But honestly, not only would I say that Microsoft is the most innovative tech company currently on the block but, it's the most open which of course is key in accelarating and securing the adoption of the platform. I'm vaguely aware of things Apple and Google
are working on only because I know a few people that love to talk about things that are 'Top Secret'. The first Core Animation Beta is set to release in about 3 weeks and still the major peice of information is a marketing video of a "3D Photo-Domino". I think
by the same time in WPF's history there had been nearly a year of CTP's, ton's of docs, articles, blogs from the developers and evangilists on all major aspects of the platform and even a book on the market. This is why I hate to see Apple gain market share...
I dont want to have to be in the unforunate position of having to design and write apps for a company that's run like the CIA when it comes to releasing developer oriented information.
