DDD4 : "Borrowing the C9 Camera"
DDD looks like a brilliant event. Hmmm why didn't I know about this until it was too late to attend.
Congradulations on the turnout and you'll see me next time around.
My only complaint is that there are so many great sessions going on at the same time that I never know which to choose.
Yup think I missed some of the good sessions - next time I'll try and get the inside word on which ones should be best!
Anyone else from Glasgow on channgel9? or Scotland for that matter?
Well I'm in Edinburgh most of next month
I almost made it ! I almost didn't get involved in any more video's!
Sheva
Eagle... is that you?
We do have Brits on here because the language used on the forum is predominately English, because of this it can seem that there are a lot of us, but I like to think we are a friendly bunch and we are as open minded and ready to listen to what you have to say as the next person. So fire away and keep on posting my friend!
This will change as we get more of the world involved with creating C9 content. We need to be more global-minded on C9. I have this as one of my 2007 committments, so, it'll probably happen...

Considering the US is part of the former Empire I think you're benched for lack of team spirit.
You might want to take a look at Scottish Developers. We are a non-profit user group based in Scotland that is by the community for the community of the community (to misquote Lincoln). And, most importantly of all, membership is free!
We are in the process of arranging events for next year and I'm sure you'll find many channel niners there too.
Specifically, I'm trying to put together some events in Glasgow and am wanting to know what people want to here about. If you're interested in that you can comment on what you'd like to see (or give a talk on) here.
One world,
C
Great video though, congrats!
Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Los London are the only places C9 has visited since 4/04, un qué mundo!
Funny, you were bitching and whining over the Barcelona videos too.
Then there was Toronto for Jamie, there's also a French video, Japanese ones and the ones taken in India.
Maybe you couldn't see over the chip on your shoulder so you missed those.
What about Barcelona? Or even this clip which was filmed in Reading.
Charles still has 47 American States and about 193 Countries to go.
What's up with you? Take it easy. Go out for a walk.
Below the belt Eagle... stop right there. And the US has plenty of coverage too at many events. The difference here is that we the community leaders suggested that we got C9 involved at the organisation stages to get the video done. If they hadn't done it we would have done it instead.
Maybe you could consider getting C9 to follow one of the big US community events in this way, but be nice to the C9 guys or they won't do it with you!
Back on track now ...
One of the best things I love about user groups is that they give the opportunity for anyone to try their hand at speaking. Many groups have latched onto this with a 15 min 'nugget' talk at the beginning of an evening.
Now I'm going to do my first 'nugget' in Jan at my local user group and it's my first public presentation.
We? You're a C9 employee now?
Charles goes along with it because then he can say C9 is sooooo international, just as he used to talk about C9 agnosticism when we had Beer28.
Wrong. Agra, Delhi, Cambridge, Barcelona, too... Next year, even more places.
C
Not sure what your problem is Eagle, but we are in fact (and have been for some time) delivering content in more than one language. I can't scale to cover the entire planet, obviously, but, then again, Channel 9 is not (nor has it ever been) about me...
I will travel as much as I can next year, but, remember, Channel 9 is not the only job I have (I own significant components of both Mix and PDC...)
Be patient, it takes time to scale and it will require international communities to make Planet 9 a reality. I have a budget and it doesn't include travelling to every country in the world.
C
It would be cool to have MIX '08 in Mexico.
Barcelona
Japan
Russia
UK
US
All these places coincide with events that Charles and his team have been fortunate enough to get along to.
One man and his camera can only get around so much... so the question is what do you want from C9... content or countries? Surely what you really want is good content from the people who know their stuff, or are you looking for something that just doesn't really fit with the whole C9 ethos? (I'm assuming that you aren't just trying to be difficult, because if you are you may as well stop that now because people will just stop taking you seriously.)
We could really make an impact in Mexico and South America.
I'm talking about the entire C9 community helping out.
Are you aware that the Russian effort is just one guy?
So imagine what 50 of us could do.
So why aren't you doing anything then, aside from piss, moan and post links to your blog?
Eagle pack it in! If you want to make a statement, make a thread and answer comments in the normal way, don't be disruptive and take threads off track to fulfil your own agenda.
*********************************************
Back to the point, what makes the DDD model successful?
1) Completely community run event
2) Different user groups coming together and push in the same direction.
3) Community speakers with real world experience this makes credibility
4) Informative and popular sessions because the community votes for the sessions they want
5) Good venue, it's not central but it is very easy to get to and the rooms are good.
6) Supportive sponsors that allow a very high degree of freedom and autonomy
So what have I missed ?
The thing is that it's a simple format and there is no reason it couldn't be copied else where by different countries or communities.
The Geek Dinner afterwards is an excellent social and networking opportunity.
A packed day so that hardest descision is which of these great sessions should I attend. If it were repeated over 2 days so I could see presentations I missed the first time round I feel I still wouldn't see everything I wanted to. The quality is that high.
OMG what have I started, all i wanted to know is if the 9ners who live in this (Scotland) part of our small plannet want to meet up for a few drinks maybe a Geek stile dinner?
And as for being "nationalistic", im not sure why you have a problem with that, we are a plannet of many nations.
so if anyone wants to meet up in the new year email me
Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to all
I think it was more aimed at Eagle who has posted various comments about the places where Channel9 has filmed and is upset that it hasn't been to certain places yet while ignoring some places that it has been. The management misconception that if one woman can have a baby in 9 month, imagine what you can do with 9 women in one month comes to mind.
As for a Geek Dinner - I'm up for that idea.
And, as it is Christmas Day now - Have a very Merry Christmas!
Yes. My statement had nothing to do with the request for a community event in Scotland...
Merry Christmas!
C
That guy was smart, passionate and engaging
As much as I hate to say this; a lot of English people talking tech seem to come across as uncharismatic on video (not talking about this one in particular) which is a shame. We really dropped the ball on this one compared to our American counterparts.
Great to see more of these videos coming – we will get there!
Five hour drive - Is that all!
I drove down from Glasgow, got as far as the South Lakes then realised I'd forgotten my medication and had to drive back again - so that was an extra 250 miles (and £30 of petrol) on my journey. Total journey time 13 hours.
Okay - I'll see you there then.
