Alex Kipman - Building a mobile service | TheChannel9Team

While we were at the Topcoder contest last month handing out Nine Guys we met Alex Kipman (he is lead program manager on MS Build). He has a cool demo of using Visual Studio to build a system for a variety of mobile devices.

Of course the demo was done in a hotel lobby of a Silicon Valley hotel. Hear the kids screaming. Heheh.

Anyway, learn how to use Visual Studio to create a system that'll call MapPoint that'll use a GPS and a variety of mobile devices.

Haven't watched it yet but notice the use of the tablet pc ( toshiba m200 here ).

I've noticed more tablets on this site than any other non-tablet pc site...
Do they give them free to MS engineers or something?

You don't need an MSDN subscription. You can just order it on DVD for a nominal fee ($5 or something iirc)

The DVD is free, you just have to pay shipping. It's just a DVD in a sleeve, not a big box, so that's pretty cheap.

I purchased my Pharos GPS reciever as part of buying Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005. I bought it at the Microsoft Company Store for a silly low price.

However it does not come with the bluetooth dock.

For that, I just (litterly 5 minutes ago) went to www.buy.com and ordered one for $84.26 (http://www.buy.com/retail/product_jump.asp?sku=10382058&SearchEngine=Shopper&SearchTerm=10382058&Type=PE&Category=Comp&dcaid=15889).

I'm going to have fun playing with this on my Audiovox SmartPhone and DELL Insipron 8600 notebook (which I should also get this week).

I remember Bert Keely, (I believe it was him who said it), saying that the Tablet PC is the evolution of the desktop. How fast do Tablets go, nowadays? Now with the desktop approaching 64-bit, I hope the Tablet will follow.

Great demo!!

We may actually build a solution based on some of the information on this demo, it actually covers one of our current requirements

We have about 600 technicians that can benefit from having this type information and functionlity.
