VOIP to SOIP. That makes us laugh. But, how the telephone is changing is no laughing matter.

Combining video, voice, and data are changing the way we work. Balz Wyss, product manager for Windows Mobile, gives us a short primer on the trends he's seeing in the voice over IP market.

We're seeing these trends in our offices already. In fact, here at Channel 9 we're using VOIP to talk with our boss, Lenn Pryor, because he works out of his home in California while the rest of us are toiling away in rainy Redmond, WA.

I'm sorry, but I'm still not understanding SoIP. Basically, if I'm a sales guy, a customer calls, the caller ID shows me who it is, but because I have SoIP, I can be lazy and not have to punch in the info for my customer in my CRM because SoIP will automatically do it for me?

I understood the value of VoIP. No long-distance phone charges. No need for seperate voice and data lines. What's the value of SoIP?! Unless of course, someone is going to call me and upload Windows source code as we talk and see eachother via our web cam.

In a call centre environment that feature would be very welcome. Don't sniff at how lazy people want to be sometimes

This functionality is currently available.. I remember using such systems over 5yrs ago where they would use CallerID information to search for the customer. I suppose the challenge will be to ensure appropriate information is sent on transmission via whichever MS ;P client is used to ensure client information can be picked up & passed through to the approproate API on the other end.
