Enjoy.

 Microsoft getting into hardware.

Erik's wrong. Microsoft first got into hardware in the late 1970's with a card we did for the Apple II.

We continued that in the 80's with add-in cards for the IBM PC - we sold one that added a real time clock, for example - that meant you didn't need to update the system time everytime you booted the computer.

The first mouse was in (I believe 1982 or 1983), and THAT was because of graphical user interfaces.

Btw, I gave the hardware guys my oldest mouse back when I was in the same building as them - Steve Shaimen gave it to me about 10 years ago, it was from quite literally the very first case of Microsoft mice ever delivered from the factory.
Gee, I found that rather annoying. Why? Because every MS mouse I've had failed in rather a short time frame. Especially the wheel mouses. The wheels become loose and don't turn in an even manner.

I'm currently using a retail one I couldn't sell, and soon after a few uses, it became a very poor performer. Some times the left click becomes a double click, and the side buttons become stuck.

I could return it under warrantee because I'd had it for over a year. Even though it was sealed in the retail box, there is no proof that I had just opened it. So, I'm lumped with a bad mouse that I paid a premium for because it was a Microsoft mouse. So,
the last four mouses I've had were all MS ones, and all failed after a short life. None had coke spilt on them nor coffee either.

I've also used many other brands, and to date, none of them have ever failed.

PS: I'm not a gamer either, so there was no compulsive mouse clicking going on.
posted by dnrfan

Congratulations! You are one example of many MS Mouse buyers. I've used three or four MS mice (both optical and nonoptical) and all of them were wheel mice. I must say the scroll wheel on the basic MS Optical Mouse Blue was THE BEST I've ever used (including
a newer and older Logitech I've tried).

So, maybe you can keep in mind that you are one of many MS Mouse users...and talk accordingly.

I had the MS Notebook Optical mouse just for some 2-3 months and the wheel started to get stuck in the button frames.
