seeing that the cable company receaves a payment from both the subcriber and the advertising, makes me suspect they are doing just fine. =) tell me again why i pay for cable and halve to watch all those comercials?

Youtube will always stay around, because of the fact that people can upload videos. This of course goes with all other video-hosting sites (Metacafe, etc), as well.
Sure, it's great that we will be able to watch streamed shows (hopefully, not cut-up into sections, like they do to Heroes on NBC.com) online, but I'd like to see them in HD and not at low-resolution formats, which would probably be difficult to do.
I would only go online to see episodes that I missed.
Hopefully, this will pave the way for newly released movies to be distrubted online, as well as the theatres. Don't get me wrong, it's still great to see movies on the big screen, but studios could be making more money if they distrubted the movies online, as well as the theatres (and even on DVD) at the same time.
I do think the Internet is the future for TV, movies, music and video games. Some day, we won't need any more CDs, DVDs, etc. It will all be streamed/downloaded.
IMO, I think it's the beginning of the end of advertising/commercials and cable companies. Hell, Comcast's ON DEMAND still doesn't have Heroes, 24, The Office, Lost, Survivor, etc. They have HBO, Showtime programs, but not the regular network programs, which I think is really lame.
As for the advertising, I'm so sick and tired of commercials. We have been putting up with this crap for so long that I want to see it end (or change dramatically). It's worse enough we get commercials in the movie theatres, as well as on the Internet.
Honestly, they should just allow commercials to be created just for the Superbowl.
I would be in-favor of more product-placement in the shows (done smartly and creatively).
Another topic this distribution of shows online brings up is that they probably could be uncensored/uncut, because I don't think the FFC has no say/role about online content.
I think it would be interesting to see NBC, Fox, CBS, ABC, etc. start broadcasting uncut/uncensored versions of their shows online, without worrying about the FCC. I mean, that's what's so great about HBO and Showtime is that their shows are not censored.
Now, of course, there would have to be some kind of parental control thing set-up online, if this were to happen, but I would like to see shows like 24 broadcasted, as if they were on HBO.
