Holographic Video Advancements

Michael Bove, the head of the Consumer Electronics Lab at MIT, has created a new incarnation of his previous holographic-video system, the Mark II. While the Mark II is an impressive system, it is 14-year-old technology that takes up most of the room. However, the new system called, appropriately, the Mark III, is small enough to fit on top of a desk.

Scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer, the Mark III can run on a standard PC with a graphics card and costs only a couple of hundred dollars to produce. Although he currently does not have any manufacturing partners, Bove predicts that down the road his system could become a standard fixture in doctor's offices for viewing magnetic resonance images and 3-D scans. With Mark III's low cost to produce, the technology would also be within the reach of gamers and other technology enthusiasts.
