Is it going to be open source or Microsoft open source.... like just Microsoft Code?
But open.
Microsoft can put out more code inside the legal structure of the foundation.
Microsoft Partners and companies can develop frameworks to help people solve problems and also as a way to funnel then in to also buying the more advanced version of thier product.
Also interoperability.
With cloud and service bus, rest capabilities, windows 7 and windows 7 mobile coming there is going to be a huge new canvas to develop apps. This is a vehicle to get more stuff built ontop of it all and spark more innovation on the platform.
I might be in the clouds with this one but they are seeing that the desktop is not the battleground, Microsoft wants to own the pipes.
"the network is the computer"
Someone asked Wayne Gretzky how he played so good for so many years
“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.”
in this S+S world that is coming theres alot of things that need to built within it and ontop of it.
They are giving out their tools and servers for free to students and startups via Bizspark and they need people to build software and services with them so they can beat the other guys.
But even more than that... everyone won when we standardized on the windows desktop and people could make money by just developing for windows. as opposed to having versions on OSn - OSx.
they want you to say "the windows network is the computer"
