SharePoint for Developers Part 1: Introducing VSeWSS 1.3

Download

Right click “Save as…”

Kirk Evans demonstrates the new features of Visual Studio Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services (VSeWSS) 1.3 February 2009 CTP.  We focus on the deployment aspects of SharePoint development and how VSeWSS makes this much easier in the current release.  This is part 1 of a series on SharePoint for Developers.

  • Kirk, I found that the video was just too small to see what was going on. But I got the general gist of what you were demoing.
  • You could try the HD version of download

  • Kirk, good job on the video.  Very compelling!  I recommend everyone use the HD version of the video if possible.
  • Kirk Evanskirke Go Dawgs!
    Good feedback. I am recording more in this series, I will zoom in on the text much closer.  The WMV is much easier to see.
  • Kirk E, any recommendation on getting this to work with WIndows Server 2008?  STSDEV was causing me trouble as well.  I've tried the whole Run As Administrator thing.  Still researching, but let me know if you have heard of any tips/tricks.

    --- Update ---

    Nevermind, I figured it out.  The release notes held the key, but I couldn't simply take the provided app pool owner and put it in the Administrators group.  Instead I had to create a new application pool and make sure it was in all the right groups.   I'll try to add more details soon in a wiki/blog.

  • Very nice, short and to the point!

  • O/T: What tool do you use for doing the zoom/pan of this recording?
  • Kirk Evanskirke Go Dawgs!
    I used Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp) to record and encode the video.  Unfortunately, I used the microphone on my webcam for the audio, hence why the audio is poor.  I am using a much nicer USB microphone for subsequent screencasts, and trying to tweak the video to look a little nicer.  Any comments / suggestions are welcome.
  • Getting an error message when running the WSP View;

    "The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'.  The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'.

    I tried following your demo in my virtual environment with Admin credentials.  Ideas?

  • Found this answer to this in the VSeWSS 1 3 Mar 2009 CTP Release Notes.rtf, found on the same page you download the VSeWSS 1.3 extension;
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=fb9d4b85-da2a-432e-91fb-d505199c49f6

    The extension runs as a service but needs elevated privileges which are noted in the release notes.

  • I like it, I am going to try updating my Visual Studio right now...

  • Hi Thanks for your hard work and I have decided to use VseWSS 1.3 on my new project.

    Thanks

  • Did you run the scrips before install of VSeWSS 1.3?

    I think the offender may be below
    cscript adsutil.vbs set w3svc/1/root/NTAuthenticationProviders "Negotiate,NTLM"

    This is yet another poor example.  There is no discussion about the original creation of the site that is needed to deploy.  There is no discussion about what to do if you encounter errors, which I did.  You live in some World where everything works perfectly for you, sadly, that is not the real World.
