regarding the comment bill made about us not wanting to hear exec's like him on channel 9 - and that he doesnt really go there or read it (side stepped)

There should be some sort of monthly - bullet point exec memo "The best of Channel 9" - that they must read - so they are at least briefed on the major threads and discussions - maybe just the top 5

Then the next time an exec is asked - "do you go to channel 9" they can at least say - "I read the quarterly briefs - and know what are customers/developers are talking about.

The only part I found un-cool about the interview - was that he almost sounded like one of those old Execs that say " oh a computer? email? my secretary does that for me - i dont use a computer"

Blogging is important - and not that anyone expects bill or steve to watch videos (of stuff they no about) - they should have some idea of what the curent "C9 vibe" is at all times

We do such a report for execs. Bill is a weird case, though. EVERYONE wants a piece of him. Heck, I had to argue that Channel 9 was as important as talking to the Rolling Stone.

He has told us lots of times that he loves Channel 9. Heck, he begged for an interview in BusinessWeek. I bet he gets here more than he lets on. Remember, he can't dis all the other communities either, nor can he set expectations that he's gonna be here a lot.

and it was a good idea, one that stuff like the OS X Dock, ObjectDock, and the sidebar apps still try to implement. You can still see ideas borrowed from it in apps like OS X Dashboard and Konfabulator.

I liked his answer to "why do you still work?". I've always thought that the whole "kill/smash the competition" came more from Balmer and others on the board and that Bill just believed that his solution was the best. Why bother with the others? I've never thought the "innovate integration" stuff came from a desire to have the computers work better, not to stifle competition (at least from Bills POV). And I've noticed there's no "Balmer foundation".

I think I'd have a more interesting time talking to Bill Gates than I would Steve Jobs.

I was told not to shoot his windows or his kids' pictures, for obvious reasons.

But his office is remarkably plain. It has a great video of the parking lot. It's maybe five times the size of my office, but has the same kind of furniture in it. Nothing real remarkable about it, actually. Certainly not the kind of stuff you see on Donald Trump's offices.

Just listened to the interview all the way and it seems you stunned Gates with the: "what would you ask yourself?" question. Better perhaps to have used that time to ask him who he sees as Microsoft's competition moving forward and why?

He didn't say a word -- unless I missed it -- about Apple or Google and it seems that in even 10 minutes both of those topics are important enough to at least seap into his commentary.

If you can go back again, you have to try and get his side of where Microsoft sees Google. All we read out here is chair throwing tantrums, profanity laced tirades and jealousy over employee hires. There are two sides to every story and while obviously you can't get into cases under current litigation there can be some small peeks through windows, no pun intended, about how Microsoft is moving forward with its competition?

Also the issue of buying up other web properties like Yahoo has been doing. You had to be burning to ask him why Microsoft didn't buy flickr or Konfabulatr, Robert? Weren't you? And what about Skype? Microsoft's name was mentioned there, but today the big word is eBay might be in on that.

Seems to me like other companies are eating Microsoft's lunch on some of these acquistions and I'm curious what the Chief Software Architect thinks about that.

Some doors were opened to go into competition when Bill talked about how they liked to take on the big guys. Opportunity missed ... but maybe next time

Still, overall a good job.

I heard that the guy flew coach until it became a security issue. And there is also the rumors that he is only going to give his kids like 10 million each when he dies and donate the rest to charity.

AFAIK, Bill's always had a big office, but very little that's not std ms kit. I suspect he's got a pretty big flatscreen TV in his office, I know he used to have something like it last time I was in his office (which was many, many years ago).

Inside joke. In 1994 I interviewed him when I worked at Visual Basic Programmer's Journal and he promised me that VB 4 would be released on the Macintosh. It never was. I later found out that it was because it was really buggy, didn't work the same way the Windows version did (which would have confused developers because their apps wouldn't have been cross-platform).

But, it reminds me that even if Bill says something that doesn't mean it'll be that way. So Larry wanted me to remind Bill that he doesn't always call it right.

Larry, you've worked at Microsoft too long. You should go to some other companies' headquarters. Yeah, Bills is nice (he did have some fun toys on his desk) but it wasn't over the top. Other companies are far more oppulent than Bills is.

It's one of the things I really like about the company. They try to keep costs down and therefore profits up. That attitude protects my job. I've seen a lot of other companies just piss away their resources and end up firing everyone.

It's nice to see how enthusiastic Bill is about TabletPC. He's right on the money about the Student Tablet PC, although his dream hasn't yet been realized (not just the price, the availability of e-books...which is why I scan my own)

If he's right about voice recognition being on the virge of common use, then Tablet PC's are about to explode in popularity.

Wow, he was really relaxed and energized, best interview with Bill Gates I have ever seen. His response to your question about channel 9 and what you are doing Scoble was really funny, "Video Stuff".

I think its the first time, I have seen him paused to a question so long asked by someone, (If you were in my position, what would you as Bill Gates of Microsoft?) Good one Scoble.

I notice at the end of the interview he kind of rushed out of the chair, was it to shake your hand or check e-mails? Very nice interview overall. When he said $500 Tablet, I was saying to my self "what the hell is he talking about?" I wanted to see more of his Office though and get a glimpse of his PC and Monitors, I heard he has 2 humongous LCD's.

By the way: next time, Scoble, ask Bill G whether he could help out a little bit Windows Mobile division - he said "take on nokia and on phones", but I doubt whether Bill G understands at all what is the problem? The problem is very small marketing - nokia is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing of phones and on maketing them. So more marketing money for Windows Mobile (or maybe some synergetic marketing with other MS products) is needed + some campaign about Windows Mobile being stylish.

So question to Bill G coudl be: "with regard to Windows Mobile phones: how do you, Bill G, see Microsoft defeating huge marketing money that nokia throws at customers? and how Microsoft can cope with a common feeling that customers have - also with regard to Windows Mobile phones : 'Microsoft has no style' !

Please note that these 2 things are not tiny issues and not only related to hardware - just take a look at beatifully designed animated icons in Sony Ericsson phones and compare them with ugly primitive icons in Windows Mobile 5.0 !

Thats the effects of sitting around a computer since the age of 12, I do that all the time when I'm talking to somebody sitting in a chair with a handrest. Sometimes your back gets sore quick staying in one position and your muscles get sore too, so you kind of wrap your hands around the chair to feel more comfortable and relaxed.

It was good pep talk, not much substance: I kept thinking how does all that passion we see with Gates unable to sit quietly in his chair, how all that energy gets translated when he's commandeering, debating or arguing to an audience he doesn't seek to charm. Hmm, a lot to learn.

I don't envy being in your position, Robert: I'd quake similarly and would not know on which foot to dance. Asking tough questions would probably not have been a good career move.

Very nicely done, Robert. For the next time, I'd like to hear more quaestions about Microsoft's investments in companies, technology, research, etc. Details about how the company is spending it's money give a lot of insight into where they see technology leading.

If you want to really ask the "tough" questions, I'd ask about why Microsoft allowed Internet Explorer fall behind the internet standards, or how Microsoft plans to become more agile when it comes to dealing with unexpected (and missed) trends.

But overall, very well done!

The thing I liked about what Mr. Gates said is that he's not satisfied with how software is today. Many of his criticisms about what is wrong with software are right on. There is so much room for improvement.

Also, for being one of the world's wealthiest and powerful people, he seems amazingly down-to-earth.

It's neat to see BillG on C9. Took me a bit by surprise, but this is about as uncut as you'll see of this man who's worth billions. I have to agree that we still haven't solved some of the hard problems. However, as Microsoft knows and many devs know, appearance often trumps reality in many people's minds. So, if it appears like computing is moving foward, then of course it is... Of course, it makes a lot of sense that you (or he) don't bring up X, Y or Z offered by competitors (Apple, Google, etc.) because the instant a person does this, he'll send a host of people flocking to check it out. I'm sure what he says or doesn't say can move markets and that is one thing I don't envy.

It's rather unfortunate that Microsoft, which has done work on search technologies for years, still takes second (or third) to Copernic Desktop Search in desktop search and a distant third to Google. If I were to predict, I'd say search technology will entirely eclipse speech recognition and the TabletPC in the next 15-20 years. When I choose to use the mini keyboard on the PPC over the handwriting feature, it shows how useful the keyboard has become to my productivity and speech technology cannot replace this in the next 5 or even 15 years, I think. BillG also truly underestimates the complexity of human language, I believe. Can speech recognition recognize words in a song or pinpoint one person in a crowd?

While I think his short-term predictions in computing are off-base, I find much to admire about him as a person. His simplicity in his office is evident and his humility doesn't seem affected when answering the question about how he wants to be remembered. However, I wonder how he would have answered it if his children were in the room...

I read Business at the speed of thought and the one before that one (The road ahead?) - and it was hilarious when we would say stuff like "in 5 years, pcs will be the size of a notebook..." and then it happens in around the time he called it.

Are you guys sick of me talking about search and bioinformatics yet? Next interview it would be awesome to hear him call out (give estimates) on some bio/search technology - so we know where to put our time.

I was thinking about writing some articles again, but... I might be switching gears pretty soon. i.e. creating some awesome search solutions in Redmond.

I don't think I'll get to meet Bill next week, but I'll get to meet alot of awesome search engineers who have. I get to meet the guy who built most of the Index Server!!

To get into shape I'm building something this weekend with community server, aggregating remote community search (and content) - like Amazon A9 does.

I had to take the .Search source download down - but maybe I'll do another binary, but I'm done with building search under Nata1, hopefully my next release will have the Microsoft logo on it

For now, you can still use Nata1.2 and Nata1.3, alot of people have gotten it to do anything they've ever needed or wanted to, under 100,000

So Glad our big boss mentioned "Biology". I am from biology bg and got into computer programming 16+ yrs ago accidentally via doing a biological expt in one of my papers. I believe there's a great future for growth in the fields of AI and more so in the areas of understanding how human brain works. Marrying s/w w/ the knowledge of inner workings of human brain, will enable us to creating TRUE autonomous systems or robots.

I was reading a book titled, "On Intelligence" by Jeff Hawkins. This book is a great door opener to how little we know of our own brain. We will start seeing more aggressive activity in this field in the near future.

After all, we're only as powerful, intelligent as our s/w

I want to see Bill get back into the tech side of things - moreso than ever. IMHO, if there was one thing that is critical to this company, its seeing Bill come off strong on the tech side.

One area I would love to see (as I'm working through this myself now) is RSS compared to WebServices - next time I'd love to see you pop the question! I know what RSS is roughly, how I use it in my apps, and in Search - but I want to know what it Really is - and I know that any answer from Bill is never going to be BS.

The nice thing about Bill is the fact that we never get BS. No-one can debate that one and if you want to debate that, well, we can

Aw, how I would hate to only have 2 Mbps!!!
Where I live, the minimum people have these days is 3,3 Mbps.
I have 100 Mbps at work, and a 10 Mbps at home.

Downloading the video took exactly 32 secs.

So compressing it more would be a bad thing for us, I like these higher quality videos!
Only solution to keep everyone happy is to offer 2 download versions.

Cool Video - We done Scoble and the C9 Team!

When you next visit could you ask how he feels when demos bomb/crash on him, does he accept it?

Also could you ask if you Microsoft could work with Sky over here in the UK to better intergate with Windows MCE. I want to see a Sky card with dual tuners on it and a USB card reader for the subscription service.

I always feel that the UK is an after thought when it comes to some technogles from the States.

Why is XP Pro/Home, Offce so expensive? Can MS real justify the cost?

Great video and would like to see more......

I'd love to, but in 15 minutes you're not going to get in depth on nearly any topic. And, like Bill said, if you want to get technical it's far better to get technical with the guys who are building a technology than with him or other execs.

Another nice video...congrats.

It's good that he still has a sort of "hunger" about software, and wants to make it better. That shows that he hasn't lost his interest. It's also refreshing to see that he is very aware of what is going on in the lower levels of his company. Some CEOs, presidents, etc. really don't have a clue.

"Taking on Oracle" ... Oracle's stock...quick check...is it dropping? LOL

Reign of the Geek...I think the space folks still fall into this category.

Like Karim said..."stack overflow!" on the "What would you ask?" question. LOL

Speaking of going into schools...why is it every school I ever go into has either a lab full of Macs or old Apple II machines?

As much as I hate to be the bad guy in all this...I'll repeat what I've always said about security and software...until you deal with it at the hardware level and make it a complete pain for people to try to come up with workarounds...good luck.

I'm not sure I like the whole automation stuff though. As much of a geek as I am I still think some things should be left to humans to do. And I'm a bit skeptic about speech recognition... it's nice, but I type faster than I talk. Talking to machines is pretty embarrassing.

In any case, I love how he believes that computers are for people to use, not just geeks. So few geeks these days bother to look at the big picture. Really refreshing to listen to people like him talk.

And man... I'm so curious what Bill does on Linux!

I love the bit around 5:50 where Bill is describing just what MS is tackling and where they are tackling other vendors. The sheer look of relax and excitement on his face as he blatently says: "We pick the hard ones..."

That's the best idea I've heard on here for improving the site.

There should be a two types of noteable videos, "Most Watched" links that have a date cutoff of 30 days, calculated by diving the total number of views by the number of days since posting. As then "Most Popular", which is tallied by what posts have the most forum chatter. Both of which could be top 5s, making a totol of a top 10 list.

And the coder who can somehow merge these two lists and order them intelligently is a sharp coder.

You don't understand: mobile phone industry is not the same as Office software or operating systems or databases. BTW: speaking of Tablet PC: if Bill Gates is left-handed (as I am) then I wonder why there is no way to select "left-handed mode" in Tablet PC OS, so that all scroll bars should be on the left side (not right side as usual)? The only answer I can imagine: Bill Gates is not using Tablet PCs really often...

Summarizing I think that in next interview with Bill Gates Scoble should ask him: a) how Microsoft can counter big advertisemnt campaigns, big marketing power, of nokia, in the view that Microsoft makes only software - Windows Mobile - and marketing of Windows Mobile phones is tiny, b) why Tablet PC is not adaptable for left-handed people ? are you left handed?

You're right, it is embarrassing for us, but I think that will be a generational thing. People were scared of telephones before the following generation adopted them. Keyboards will always be more efficient in certain situations for certain tasks, but I really look forward to being able to control the basic functions of my PC/home by casually issuing commands... speech recognition will have its place.

I think that's one of the big problems of Linux, it's developed by geeks for geeks. Sometimes I wonder if they even want regular users coming into their world. Until that issue is addressed, Linux is never going to hit the mainstream IMO.

My favorite technology is Tablet PC's i mean damn those things rock, i got salesmen from a manufacturere going around their clients with these tablets, giving quotes etc... the only thing i would love to see is more speech technology breakthroughs...

That was a really great interview! Thanks to Channel9 and Bill for this wonderful peak into the world of Microsoft. I enjoyed the personal touch and felt like I was in the room. My mind couldn't help but think of the questions that I would ask Mr. Gates. I would ask if he ever thinks about Apple's Knowledge Navigator from the 80's-an awesome proposal which incorporates a lot of his thoughts on where computers should be, and are headed. I also would have asked if he has any pet personal programming projects that he likes to do on his own, my mind was thinking of him leaving the interview, and if he were to allowed given his busy schedule, does he ever toy around and have fun programming, all on his own, just for fun. I loved how he hit the nail on the head expressing that Channel9 is providing a vehicle for all types of people to see that Microsoft personnel are really just people, gifted people, but nontheless are real people that do think and feel. It was nice to see him speak that way and let his hair down. Very refreshing!
