Jason Shellen - Scoble visits Google? Blogger for Microsoft Word

Download

Right click “Save as…”

Microsoft goes to Google? Yeah, Jason Shellen, of Google's Blogger team, invited us over to meet the Google Blogger team where they showed off a new feature that lets you edit your blogs from Microsoft Word: Blogger for Word. We snuck past the security guard and talked our way past the PR department. This video is one of the first that we've done at a Microsoft competitor, but it's pretty significant that you can now use Microsoft Word to create Blogger posts now.

WOW!!! Cold shoulder like anything....and I'm at 1:56 into the video.
  • scobleizerscobleizer I'm the video guy

Blogger for Word only does text. No images. No audio/video.

Well, I've known Jason for a long time and that's his personality, in reality they treated me very well. I should have videoed when they showed me Google's Master Plan. That was a lot of fun. Oh, and the food in the cafeteria is great, should have showed that too.

Why didn't you take Ballmer along with you? Wink
  • to be honest I am suprised this has not been done already. I mean it only seemed logical that word have someway to interact with a blog.

What a usless app then.  All you get out of it is spell checking (and basic formatting I guess).  It doesn't seem like it would have been much work to upload video/audio/images.  They should open source it, that might be cool, at least get around the myriad of short comings.

Am I the only one that finds google's applications to be lame?  They all seem thrown together with little thought (and absolutly no interaction).

Wow, that guy seemed...a little put out.  Like he was above the "Microsoft guy" that had the privilege to come there.

The app seems lame, you can't post audio or video?  What about images, he never touched on those.  I might as well write my own...

  • That's pretty neat.

I wonder if the source-code is available, I'd like to convert the app to support .Text blogs too. Then I could use it over at my blog on WDevs.

Maybe I'll wait for the new Visual Studio 2005 for Office. It'll probably be a snap to write a similar toolbar using C# with that.

Nice to see a non-Microsoft company on Channel 9.

Scoble you went to google. :O Make sure steve ballmer dont see this lol.  But for a google office its not as nicey as a microsoft office. lol hope microsoft wins the google case
  • Interesting video...good job on the "enemy territory" thing.  LOL.  He almost has a Bill Murray style of delivery where he could probably deliver any line with an absolutely serious face.

But you don't know if he is kidding.

    Or not.

Shifty eyes. You can almost see the wheels of sarcasm turning at a hyperactive rate.

By the way there was a typo in his post.

"You can type whatever you like in Word an have it posted to your blog."

Needs a 'd' after the 'an'.

So how much actual VB6 code went into this? It seems dangerously simple. And why would you have to use a secret "outside company" for that?

  • Here's the blog entry.  No, there's no typo, btw:

If this had an API, I could think of some ideas of how to extend this nicely.  However, it looks like a very simple Wiki.  You could have a group of members who have access to a Blogger account.  They could be located anywhere and all update the same document.  Just a thought...

I don't find their applications lame at all.  Gmail had some awesome guerilla marketing and has many people hooked.  Google.com is still remarkable simple, fast, and still relevant.  And their text ads totally revolutionized online advertising...

And I guess I haven't mentioned their mapping technologies, which are quite good as well.

I would of liked to see it work with .Text/CS. I'm suprised that it was wrote in VB6, would love to see the code.

Any more visits to outside companys?

Did seem like Scoble did get the cold shoulder a bit, but its similar to my wife.  She acts like a witch and she approaches everyone like shye is pissed at the world and that it seems like she is mad at you but thats just her personality.  If she doesnt like you she will ignore you and just wont speak but if she likes you she will actually speak to you. This guy is probably the same way.  What surprises me though is that Microsoft hasn't developed something similar for Spaces.  I like Blogger because I can curse and use foul language and I dont get banned, I have had posts on Spaces that get deleted because it contains foul language.

    Anymore google videos coming?

We don't have any more Google ones planned.

It's comforting to see an american that isn't a bafoon, I don't base this on Scoble, he's just jolly, but most Americans come across as sycophants or bumblers.

I thought the tool was good even though I don't blog and the considderation for older users was nice.
