No, these were MVPs specificially for Xbox. There are more than 2,000 MVPs, but these are the ones you'll meet on Xbox.com.

   I'm sure the MVPs *can't* say anything about the console right now, for the same reason Larry couldn't show the games.



These videos are interesting but I can't help but feel that they're a subtle way of hyping the new console.

It's critical that MS gets out of the gate fast and furiously with the 360, some would even say that MS is helping that along a bit.

The videos on C9 are interesting looks into the cockpit, but this just feels like marketing to me. meh

What are channel 9 videos?  They are to show off the products and give a view to inside of Microsoft.  That is exactly what this video is.  This is info I have known, and some I didnt.  They arent marketing it to me, I am getting a console regardless.

It's the first time you've gotten to witness a meeting with the MVPs.

I thought it was a good way for you to get a look at the Xbox. Yeah, it's a bit different than the other kinds of things I've done, but it wasn't staged, you got to hear the reactions of MVPs and hear the kinds of things they asked.

Check your AV cable.  It is out and you need to re-connect it.  I can not answer the Xbox360 question at the time.  I have not been given that information, nor was I at the summit.

Hey, Steven Levin, COO at Procter and Gamble says that Channel 9 is "inspiring." So, maybe you're right.

Of course we're marketing. But, it certainly isn't traditional. How many other companies have a goofy guy running around with a $600 camcorder taking home-made videos and putting out the first info about a product that probably will generate several billion dollars in revenue?

What doesn't make it marketing?

I want wireless controllers in the worst way. Why? Wires are messy. My wife hates messy things. That leads to discord in the home. That isn't good.

You can buy wired controllers, though.

If you want to talk to the devs about the infrastructure of xbox live, fine. If you want to talk to 'major nelson' about the cool stuff on the 360, fine.

I just get disappointed when it disintegrates into 'OMG! I was in a super-secret meeting and I can't tell you what I saw, but I can't WAIT to get my hands on an XBOX 360!!!!!!! w00t'

Also, when I've watched a video on a new VS feature, I don't see a bunch of guys sitting around a room going "awesome; bring it on; i want mine; i want mine NOW" (12:30)

Sorry, seems like hype to me.

I hope the xbox 630 does make 'several billion dollars in revenue', MS may actually make a profit this time around.

I got asked to write a couple of paragraphs for a book on HL2 modding for O'Reilly(My friend got asked, I made a topic about it. But I got asked shortly afterwards)

It was a bit of a dodgy email so I thought it was fake so I did not reply.

Wireless is the next thing in console gaming.  All major parties (Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo) are all going to way of wireless.


rchildress, when did it disintegrates to "OMG...."?  Are you talking about the video?  This is kinda different than a regular microsoft product.  (This is my take on it).  You look at VB, or Office, or Windows, and yes they have competition and they ARE good products...but who are they aimed at?  More business like people.  There is big energy in the gaming field.  Look at the E3 Expo.  Ever go into one?  It is FULL of energy.  Not only that, this stuff that Larry was showing off will blow sony away.  Sony has been trash-talking the Xbox360 from day 1.  The product group, and the MVPs have alot of energy built up that was not allowed to be shown...yet.

Smidley- The $399 version of the Xbox360 console comes with a set of cables that does both high-def and standard definition.  On the bundle of cables you get your composite (yellow) and component (red/green/blue) cables.  On that same bundle you get composite audio (red/white) and the ability to do optical audio (for 5.1.  Additional equipment required).

An interview with a Bungie dev?  Those things are hard to come by.

The PS3 is really hard to develop for, but is comparable powerwise.

The reveloution, nobody has seen anything from them. But nintento have been historically been 'ok' with development enviroments.

It has been generally accepted that PS3 will 'win' just because of their massive market share with the PS2 and the mindshare they have, but some of the decisions that have Sony have made makes it seems like it's not going to be a clear cut battle between them.

PS3 coming out in mid 2006 for US Residents and Japanese, with RUMOURED early 2007 release for EU customers(Sony are terrible with launches like this)

And the inclusion of bluray(a plus and a minus) which will drive the manafacturing costs SKY HIGH.

And if ultimatly bluray 'loses' that will be a massive blow for sony potentially crippling them.

It all comes down to the price and exclusive games.

hahahah even today I have given people more in depth help than that!  Oh and that 'complex' super-secret information you're trying to intimidate me with is something I already knew and if I didn't it is in the X-Box Manual anyway. Plus I have replaced a DVD-Rom + HDD in a X-Box, VERY simple, no problem...

Compare that lame nooby stuff with trying to get some idiot that can't set the clock on his VCR to install a new x86 CPU in his PC over the phone then you'll know difficulty.

Just today I have had to talk though two spyware cleanups, one of which involved a safe mode reboot, both of the users are nubs of course and plus another one formatting a new hard disk (which he installed himself, but turns out that SATA port was disabled in the bios for some reason?).

We advise against that, and to have certified Microsoft technicians fix it.  I would show you more support that we give, but we currently closed down the forums due to the MASSIVE upgrade.

Without replacing the DVD-Rom the thing is a flashing box that does little to nothing, so frankly Microsoft can go * themselves if they consider it 'modified'. By the way, the new DVD-Rom is identical to the one taken out (excp serial no.); the new HDD isn't.

I wouldn't be a geek if I couldn't do these sorts of replacements/repairs myself, and I'll be dammed if I'm paying some Microsoft wire-jockey to do such easy repairs/upgrades.

The fact you play by Microsoft's rules so well is why you are an MVP, and why I can't respect the position.

My next-gen console winner? Nintendo, cause they're the only company *making* a next-gen console. Sony and MS are only putting new siding on the house Nintendo built.

MS deserves some kudos for the online stuff they're doing, but other than that... meh. I stopped playing FPSs a long time ago.

Will Xbox 360 titles not be geared toward this type gaming?
- does that cord to recharge the wireless controller come with $399 setup? Or is that an additional purchase?
- Larry said the version being shown was a developer version only when he was pulling out the hard drive and I was a bit confused if he meant this functionality whether this would be included in the final version. That's a sweet feature! Take your harddrive on the road.

As for MVPs being tremendously helpful? They sure weren't in this video lol Wink No questions really ... mostly sitting back, listening and the applause, rah-rah stuff. Put any seasoned Xbox owner in that group and it would seem to me that some good, useful Q & A would get rolling.

Got the feeling with this video that the really good stuff happened before/after the camera was turned off, but thank you for showing what little you were allowed to show.

Watch it again; that wasn't in reference to the hard disk, he was talking about the two black wires coming out the top-front of the X-Box, and said something like - "This is a development kit, in the final product you won't have those" - he just happened to be lifting the hard disk out at the same time.

They looked a little fed-up to me... I assume they had been playing with the 360 all morning themselves, and now having someone go over the features they have already played with very slowly and with Scoble asking 'funny' questions, while they COULD be playing more Halo 3 isn't my idea of a good time either.

Well, I'm taking nothing for granted these days. I bought an LCD monitor last month that didn't come with a cord to actually hook it up to the computer. The salesman was all over me about purchasing an extended warranty but never bothered to mention that it didn't come packed with the necessary cord to hook up to the computer. The box didn't say anything about no cord either, nor did the display model. Doh!

Driving home, unpacking and realizing things like this isn't a great feeling, so got to do the recon first while at the store and get everything you need. Especially with gas prices the way they are.

I'm not preordering the Xbox 360. I'm one of those launch day console gaming hunters that is going into the wilds on Nov 22. Ahh, the thrill of the hunt will be upon us soon!

The "Plug and Play kit" (what recharged the wireless controller) does not come in the $399 version.  With the $399 version you get the wireless controller, but the battery pack houses 2 AA batteries.  When you purchase the "Plug and Play kit", you get a recharable battery and the cord that connects it to the Xbox360.

They werent fed up.  The video was about Larry showing Scoble and Channel 9 the console.

In due time, you guys will all be able to see everything.

Oh, god, is Goverland posing an an MVP again? hhehehehehehe.

Bummer, more $$$. Any idea how much this "Plug and Play kit" will be and if it will be available at launch time? (I'm off to search the web too for answers).

Once upon a time console video game systems actually came with two controllers, game and everything needed to play. These days it's either buy a stripped down core system, or pay for the "package" and then still need another package and then go online and pay for more access.

How are parents buying for their children that aren't gamers supposed to know what to buy? What about first time gamers?

(retailers?)

I'll definitely be looking for the retail bundle that takes all the guesswork out of this and forms the real ultimate package. Maybe that's what the plan is here ... put it on the retailers to sell the customers everything they need. Unfortunately, not all retailers have staff that understand this stuff either. They seem more programmed to go after the extended warranties than get you totally covered.

This is actually a very real problem anytime you turn on a camera. People behave differently when they know they are being recorded.

In the other video they asked decent questions, I thought.

The real problem is they weren't allowed to show off the games yet. That's really the key piece.

Most console makers take losses on consoles. However, they don't take losses on accessories (controllers, etc). By 'encouraging' you to buy the accessories, this allows the console maker to make some of their money back because the money goes straight into their pocket, which doesn't happen with the games.

Given the $4B hit MS absorbed with xbox 1, I'm sure they want to put as many accessories out there as they can.

Don't have to tell me this, I'm a video game collector and have bought just about every game system that has come out since the NES (and several before then).

I fully understand how this works (perhaps you mistook my venting above as some sort of question?). Most console gamers who have been around awhile that I know and have talked to dislike this trend. Why do we stay aboard the train? Because we are collectors and hardcore gamers! You have to be after suffering through systems like Virtual Boy and the Sega 32X. 

So pack in what is needed, price it so they make money, fine. The only reason they started doing this is so they could keep the system price DOWN so it would generate more sales.

People that aren't hardcore gamers -- families with budgets -- won't (and in many cases can't with economics being the way they are) spend $500 on a game machine, but they will find a way to spend $299 + $100 + $50 + $50 ... etc. The truth is that the real market penetration starts at $150 or less, not $300+, that's why they are losing money on the hardware and will continue to do so until they can get back to making the hardware spec out at these prices. They need the audience and selling the hardware at a loss is part of the business plan.

They know this and we'll see an Xbox 360 for under $200 within 24 to 36 months of the launch date ... and by then we'll start hearing about the next generation system for 2010 and beyond. The lifecycle on hardware console game systems is less than 5 years these days. Gamers just keep on financing these hardware upgrades and yet the games are mostly me-too titles with little new innovation. 14 of the 17 xbox 360 launch titles are sequels. 5 of 6 of the xbox 360 secondary launch titles are sequels.

Boo hoo, please tell somebody who cares. I'm not a Microsoft shareholder, I'm a customer. 

They designed the system, not me. If they can't make money from it why should I care as a gamer? And if you note by my first comment I never said I wasn't willing to pay for the package, I just wanted to know what all *didn't* come in the package. That's what irks me. 

This comes from somebody who paid $650 for a freaking 3D0 on launch day, so I'm not concerned about shelling out the $$, just make sure it's all out there on the table and clear and don't sell packages that are missing things.

I'm talking about selling a package that actually has everything in it ..  price it accordingly, fine, but selling a "package" that is missing stuff just pisses off the customer.

I think you mistake me for an MS apologist. Believe me, I'm not.

The $4B comment was a dig at MS' shareholder-infuriating attempt to get into a market. If it wasn't for the sales of Windows and Office subsidizing it, the xbox would not exist.

Notice I said most, not all, console makers sell at a loss. Nintendo is the only console maker that consistently makes money off their consoles.

As for that guy boasting about all the things which were not impressive, went on to say that Apple should have designed it
 and that they had lapped their closest rival - what a load of sh*t. The games are going to be as bad as before and as boring, the controller looks uncomfortable, nothing close to the comfort that Nintendo is renowned for and I just know Steve Jobs is laughing at the design, its not beautiful its typical american brash design that thinks its beautiful.

See, even you used the word "few" there. If you haven't run into an arrogant MVP, then your turn is coming.

Actually, I like the MVP program as a whole, just have experienced firsthand an abnormal amount of arrogance among them. Some of the MVPs are quite valuable and helpful to the community and well deserving to be recognized.

We're getting away from the topic though. The video was somewhat useful, the MVPs in attendence for the most part were not. That's not a blast against every MVP or even all of those in attendence. If they were muzzled then might as well have shot this one with just Larry and Scoble and some cheerleaders.

More content, less butt kissing. I think that's a fair request.

If you don't have a NiMH battery charger already you're living in the stone age.  Get one, buy some batteries and stop whining.

Plus you can still get wired controllers.  The core pack has a wired controller, only the deluxe box set has wireless controllers.
