Windows 7 includes many new updates and improvements to the Graphics stack, including a new set of APIs for 2D graphics and writing text. Among them are a major reduction in memory consumption by the DWM and new more efficient ways to combine
the available APIs. Join Varun Bhartia, Program Manager, and Robert Wlodarczyk, Senior Test Lead, as they dive deep into the Windows Imaging Component also known as WIC.

In Windows Vista, the Windows Imaging Component introduced an extensible framework for working with images and image metadata. The image formats supported by the Windows Imaging Component include JPEG, PNG, and TIFF, and the supported metadata
formats include XMP and EXIF. With Windows 7, Windows Imaging Component broadens its standards compliance by providing support for progressive image decoding, expanded PNG features, GIF metadata, and metadata that spans APPn segments.
This is another video in a series of Windows 7 Graphics videos:

Is there a .NET story for WIC? (sorry I've just started watching the video), I heard of WIC awhile ago, and I wonder if theres a managed api for this already, and if it is possible to write managed codecs (is that crazy?).

The WDDM 1.1 introduced with windows vista which is responsible for reduced memory consumption should be ported to Windows vista also and should not be exclusive to Windows 7. The desktop window manager consumes a lot of memory in windows vista depending
upon the number of windows open. this feature would be nice to have in vista. why would Vista users have to suffer MS poor design decision early on with Windows Vista!
