We saw with Steven's demonstration of the new task manager that metro apps are suspended when not visible. Is it possible to create apps that perform background tasks - for example an app which watches a folder and when a file within it changes it does something with it and then (excuse the osx reference) posts a growl like notification to inform the user.
Yes, check out this SDK Sample http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Background-Task-Sample-9209ade9 to download them all see http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Windows-Developer-Preview-6b53adbb (they are awesome!)
