Some of the most compelling applications on the phone are those that leverage maps and location, and in Windows Phone 8, we've added the capability for developers to write applications that perform turn-by-turn navigation operations in the background. This session will demonstrate how to use these features, and will also talk about the new Maps control.

  • The new #nokia map control is a big #joke !

We developers were expecting the evolution of the bing map control in something more suitable for developers use.

With new nokia control developers have no alternatives to load their own custom tiles and dynamic GIS data. Just because nokia map control supports caching of nokia vector data it doesn't mean that this is the control that developers were expecting.
Moreover, beside nokia and bing, there are out there plenty of GIS data providers, some of them very specific for different kind of applications.

Just getting from bad into worse. Congrats MS!

@claudiufarcas watch the QA at the end of the session; Alternative tile sources are supported in the new control,

  • Useless control, can't even add a custom route. Only those created by RouteQuery class. And you have to be online.
Also documentation.... there is no documentation! Can't find anything about TransformCenter property.

Yes, but you can't remove the standard tiles. Alternative tiles are loaded above standard. It should be possible to load ONLY alternate tiles.

  • In the session is was said the code was going to be posted online.  Is it available?  If so where?
