It is complex and expensive to manage the enterprise IP address space due to proliferation of net enabled devices, adoption of technologies like virtualization and IPv6, and also due to the impending exhaustion of the public IPv4 address space. This has led to a pressing need for automating IP address space management, obtaining real-time insight into address utilization, and the monitoring and management of the addressing and naming infrastructure (DNS and DHCP servers). Windows Server 2012 introduces the in-box IP address management (IPAM) feature - a central framework for monitoring and managing the IP address space and the associated infrastructure servers. Apart from the core offerings, IPAM also provides support for auto-discovery of infrastructure servers in Active Directory forest; supports migration of IP address space data from legacy tracking tools and enables integration with other address provisioning systems such as SCVMM. IPAM also supports audit of IP address activity on the network to ensure compliance and enhanced change management. IPAM thus caters to the requirements of various enterprise admin personas like the network administrator, the server administrator and the forensics investigator, and it significantly reduces the operational cost of managing the IP address space and associated infrastructure servers. This session will describe the rationale, objectives and design of Windows Server 2012 IPAM, and demonstrate its key capabilities.
