This session is a deep dive into developing a real-world, modern line-of-business application architected by Microsoft Global Partner Architecture Team that addresses many demanding requirements such as multi-tenancy, tenant-specific application customisation (data, business, and presentation tier), identity federation, claims-aware services, etc. This application is a canonical SaaS application built on Windows Azure compute and storage, SQL Azure, and the Windows Identity Foundation. In this session we discuss key building blocks including claims-aware Web services and Web applications implemented using the Windows Identity Foundation, Identity Federation (ADFS) via Custom Security Token Service (STS) and .NET Access Control Service (ACS), asynchronous transaction processing using Windows Azure queues and worker roles, customizable user interface using Microsoft Silverlight 3.0, and customisable Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) based workflows. We present an end-to-end demo of the application running live on Windows Azure and explain the detailed design, key development challenges, tradeoffs, and best practices.
