My kids (girls, 11 & 14) still think Apple is the coolest thing.

Maybe that is my fault for telling them that Apple isn't cool anymore?

Its a good tactic - I think I managed to turn them right off Rizzlekicks (sorry lads) when I ended up playing them more than my kids did.

Hmmmm .... maybe I need to buy another iPhone and make sure I am on it (and speaking loudly) when I pick them up from school ....?

I have a button for this on my PC. It's super easy to push.

It is something to consider, though, the choice of generations. 

There can be a lot of factors for such changes too... maybe using a Surface is considered "rebellious" because everybody is using an iPad (including stogy old parents! yikes!) or Android.  Or maybe it could be that it looks very different.

Apple style is fashion. People flock to it initially, but then at some point everyone has it, and then it becomes uncool. No one can stand out; thus, people abandon ship to get on the next wave, with the most loyal fans staying behind.

What I don't understand is this feeling expressed by some that things will always stay the same, that companies that dominate the hearts of many will most likely continue to dominate. Things change (re: MS dominance)...heck, it can even be that Apple loses its mojo for a couple of years and regains it. Anything can happen.

Why Surface? Maybe people actually do find Microsoft cool now (my i-loving friends in the HCI world do). Its brand index certainly suggests so.

I really wish Microsoft would make stuff like this more accessible to the common user. They were making progress with the notification tray and control panel (categorization, searchability, etc.) but then along came W8... Maybe they can get it right in PC Settings in the Window 8 Store App environment but leaving stuff split between the two "control panels" really makes the beautiful Surface not so beautiful.

Or not separate things that are so related. A metro browser and its desktop counterpart should talk to each other. Separating them isn't exactly "honest" in a design sense.

I assume that you do not have a Surface RT? Something power drains the battery if you leave it in sleep or standby mode. Reviews have shown that even with a battery 3 times larger than the new iPad, it still only gets half the standby time. Several times I have left my Surface for a few days unplugged (which you should be able to do like an iPad) only to come back to a completely dead battery. So yes, in my opinion it is necessary to be able to locate and use the shutdown option in Windows RT.

You can't switch tribes! At that age you have three choices, nerd, cheerleader, or jock. Of course, the video makes that kind of confusing. You have to be a nerd to sling around the computer, a jock to be able to throw yourself around like that, and a cheerleader to make it look good.

What made that ad very odd was that it wasn't really an ad. It was more like a 4 minute long tutorial on how to use Windows 8, showing off all the major features as well as Rakuten's own app.

I know that MS is often criticized for not showing the product in their ads, but this is too far in the opposite direction! Who in their right mind is going to sit through a dryly narrated tutorial for 4 minutes when what they're trying to do is watch a video of cute kittens or something? Even I didn't make it more than halfway (and I only got that far out of a sort of morbid fascination).

This seems to be a thing with Japanese ads though. They're either exceedingly silly, or really really boring.

To top it off, all of the transitions and animations looked really jerky. I don't know what device they used in that tutorial, but it seems to be powered by a potato.
