Y'know the venerable Windows Notepad?
Well, I know of 2 bugs in it, one's a bug with the middle mouse button. If you click Mouse3 in a document, you get the "scroll circle" you get in other apps. But whenever you use it, it either moves really slowly, or really quick, there's no way you can get
it to scroll as a "readable" pace. Is this fixed in Vista?
There's another bug I experienced with large IIS logfiles. If you load a 60MB logfile into Notepad and scroll down and to the left, as soon as you drag the horizontal scrollbar the text window goes blank.

It is called mouse-panning and I agree they should change how it works entirely. It should work similar to "grab/hand" where you move the mouse to pan around instead of the current behaviour where you move the mouse a bit to scroll indefinetely. Atleast this way it should be when viewing pictures. The indefinete slow scrolling could be made by releasing MMB. If you do not release, it only pans to your movements.

I hope they didn't 'fix' it by adding all the shizen that people wanted in it. They should add tabs and all that jazz to Wordpad. Leave Notepad alone, I like it being that blank, I don't need a whole bunch of added crap like that of Notepad+ (or was it Notepad++ ?) I like it the way it is, just fix bugs but don't add features, please.
Vote 1# featureless Notepad
Loadsgood. -
I agree about the mouse-wheel 'bug'. That would be helpful. I would also like to see some new line options for UNIX and Mac OS X but nothing else.
No tabs, document formats, buttons, fields, status bars or anything else. -
Anyone else get the problem when you save a file and you have wordwrap on? The caret moves a few characters back, one for each soft line break I think. Sometimes the text itself isn't redrawn properly.

Nope, haven't seen that. -

Agreed. I don't want notepad bloat. Let it float freely.

I'm using Windows Vista and a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical using the drivers installed by Windows. This is what I see in Notepad:
I don't even see the circle with the arrows and don't have the ability to use the scroll wheel clicked (held down). Maybe I need to install the intellimouse drivers.... I can scroll up and down just using the wheel.

I don't appear to have any files that large, but I can see if I can find or make one later.
Edit: And if anyone is interested, yes, I see the circle with the arrows when I click the scroll wheel in other program such as IE7.

And as an extra note, it appears Notepad has a new icon (or two):
Edit: The top picture is from Details view in Windows Explorer and the second picture is from Icon view.
Also, Paint defaulted file type for those pictures as .PNG when I saved them. -

HOLD THE PRESSES! This goes WAAAY further than the drop shadow hint Rory gave us!
(Note I would have linked to apropriate blog entry at this point but the Rorester's blog is toast) -
How many billion$ is MS really spending on Notepad annually?

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why the icon is this small little thing inside of a big box? Or do I have to see more of the explorer window to see why?
That's a bit odd.

Its because when you enlarge folder views (up to 256x256 now) if any icons arent in Vistas icon format, or go large enough. They stick to their max res and sit inside a big box.

Ah, that makes sense.
SO the notepad isn't in Vista format - ah yes, I can tell by the edges.
Cool, thanks!

I wish they would add support to at least display \n and \r line breaks properly, even if it only saves with \r\n.

No! I need to distinguish \r alone from \r\n.
If you want to handle \r as though it were \r\n, use WordPad (also included.)

But wordpad has illogical drag + drop behaviour
