you will see there are MANY more views than active post names - usually by a factor of over ten times

I think that's a pretty standard ratio of "lurkers vs. posters" for any message board, going all the way back to pre-web usenet. I'd bet there's even a good sociology PhD thesis in that topic: "Why 90% Of People Just Like To Watch".
