..sorry in advance:
it's LAME
it is SO slow
it looks to every file - and seemingly half downloads it to determine file size - then re- downloads it!
if there is one thing in IE7 or LH you fix - please look to the FTP speeds of CuteFTP - and - an old app called FTP Explorer
They remember if you havent got the whole file
and they are VERY fast in folders with multiple directories - or directories with a bunch of 0 byte data - for example all the Frontpage _vtf folders Frontpage creates
The 2 apps above rifle through that data at blistering speeds - Win ftp / web folders / FTP view in IE - whatever it is - is SO SO lame - its bad
please fix it - thanks ![]()

Well it has already been reported at the IE Wiki page. We now have to wait until MS decides to fix it

I'm guessing that by Windows FTP you mean IE Ftp? If so, I've already heard they're revamping the FTP engine in IE7.

I think it's funny that FTP support in the browser is expected to work like an FTP client.. I figure the only thing IE needs to be able to do, is access a single file through an FTP URL.
I may be off my rocker.. but I am tired of people trying to incorporate all technologies into a single application. If the IE team goes with component development/lazy loading.. that would be fine with me, but don't stick bloat into a tool when most users won't have a need for it.
If MS tries to meet the every whim of developers in the browser, what a horrible, bloated, confused mess that will be for the grandmas of the world. Either go with extensions ala Firefox (and many other apps) or fork the codebase so developers have a "Pro" version of IE, and users get the nice "MSN Explorer" type happy go lucky experience. -
Maybe just build a plugin for a standalone MSFtp client.
Either way, it's currently not being done correctly. Why do I have to go to some ambiguously named "Advanced" section and search through 50 other options to get the thing not to freeze up on a passive server? It's so bad that most tech support people will tell you just to get an actual FTP client. Even ftp.exe is more reliable.

whatever it is - its not fast - like other apps can do
there was a press release ie 5 days - "Things we wanted but couldnt put in - New FTP"
-
Microsoft will never ever compete with cuteFTP. Not that they can't but it looks to me they knowingly try to limit their programs so that they don't compute with such ISVs. There are two issues with that.
- Europe may not allow Microsoft to innovate at that front, claiming that some company is hurt because of Microsoft's actions.
- Microsoft itself doesn't do that unless the application should be part of the operating system, for example media players and browsers.
