Sometimes, dictatorship and iron fist can really get things done, such as the situation in China and Russia:p
Manip interviews Gates:

Manip: So do you think having developers waste time creating flashy 3D effects was really the right way to go?
Gates: Vista adds a lot more than just Aero Glass; we have also re-written the audio stack and decreased application loading time...
Manip: OK, so you've had thousands of developers working for four years almost eight hours per day and all you can come up with are two REAL improvements in Vista?
Gates: Don't forget our new foundation classes, that will support development for the next ten years!
Manip: Isn't that just a nice way of saying -- "We ran out of ideas so made it easier for more creative people to do it for us" ?
Manip: Plus with the graphic buttons getting bigger and bigger in Vista, and the next Office gaining the same kind of interface aren't you basically saying - "Our customers are morons?"
Gates: Our customers vary in their abilities; we want to make computers easy to use!
Manip: Should I take that to mean you're going to keep dumbing down Windows until even the stupidest common denominator can use it? Isn't that was Bob was supposed to be?
Gates: Bob wasn't one of our greatest mar-....
Manip: IT SUCKS
Gates: Well it wasn't the be-..
Manip: It blows big time ...
Gates: OK, do you have any other Vista questions?
Manip: I've read about Vista's new DRM; and to help you in your day to day life I have brought you in this digital voice recorder -- it encodes to WMA.
Gates: Wow thank you .. I always love to try our new products and innovations!
Manip: Well first off the voice recorder runs a derived BSD OS, because having a powerful enough CPU to run CE would cost around five hundred dollars per unit... But more so, when you record voice onto it that sound is placed in a WMA file
that has DRM which means you can't move that sound off the device.
Gates: What use is it if I can't copy it to my PC?
Manip: What use is high resolution video you can't watch on your high resolution monitor?
Gates: That isn't how Vista works....
Manip: Oh yeah.. It is up to the content provider how much they screw you over... And we all know they are trustworthy and don't abuse their monopoly, right?
Gates: I think I'll have to leave it there, I am a busy guy...
Manip: Yes, I'm sure drinking $90 cups of coffee is very time consuming...
Gates: Hope we can do this again sometime

[Gates picks up phone]
Gates: Security -- I want this idiot out of the building and off the campus in five minutes!

Don't take this the wrong way, but....

The first lesson in applying for ANY job is to read the job ad THOROUGHLY.

Inundated with applications and a limited time to review them, the rejection process can be pretty brutal. And the first applications to get cut in the initial round of pruning things back to a manageable level are usually those who don't follow the rules clearly
laid out in the job ad.
Sorry, I just call stuff badly compressed or of high quality "raw" even if it is technically inaccurate... I call DVDs 'raw' for example... I really need to cut it out.

So you might want to re-read that job ad and post at the top of this thread to see who it is you're supposed to be emailing and who it is doing the hiring (Clue: it's NOT Charles).

I skimmed it and i do understand the positions available, however getting the posters name is a fair mistake and i hope you dont hold it against me.

ps. (Didn't charles post the last "We're hiring" thread?)
Well I'm the wrong person to be asking, but I suspect Microsoft is probably the one company where you don't need to worry too much about simple and understandable mistakes like this. There are some excellent guidelines to applying for a job with Microsoft on
a blog from one of their recruiters (I'm at work in my lunch break so don't have the URL to hand until I get home tonight).

I just wanted to give you a heads up for future opportunities because I've worked at some companies where it has been decided that the only way to "manage" the deluge of applications received has been to reject as many as possible for the vaguest reasons ("the
font size is too small on the CV", "he's mis-spelt the job title so there's no quality to his work" etc).

The best format for Micrsosoft is Word or plain text resumes, as they ultimately get converted into play text once they make their way into the resume system anyways.

I'll tell you, the video position was one of the ones I nearly considered. Too bad it requires moving. Having done filming, editing, interviewing, makeup, sound and lighting for a number of national television shows for a year. Plus, the fun of meeting more
Softies would be great.

Sadly, I'm very, very happy both in my current gig and in my current locale.
Beer28: I don't want to sell you a Linux laptop.
BillH: You want to go home and rethink your life.
Beer28: I want to go home and rethink my life.

Besides, I don't know ASP like Jeff is requesting. So, considering the slush pile of resumes you'd have to go through, mine wouldn't even make the first cut.

Edit: Although, I really haven't turned my debugging skills towards the code on this site. So I suppose once I learned ASP and looked at the code I could probably make it so it runs twice as fast and takes up half the memory.

Don't you mean make it run infinitely fast and take up infinitely less space...?
Cos everything can be done in infinite time

I don't think anyone is leaving. If I recall correctly, covering the PDC and producing C9 video that week wore out the entire C9 crew. It sounds like they could use extra people.

I hope that they consider adding a stenocaptioner to their crew as well to produce transcripts and text captioning.

Yes. I was also NOT the hiring manager then

Keep in mind that I may not be the hiring manager but I WILL be conducting interviews (the technical ones)... Either way, I'll end up reading your resumes...
Hey Bill,

Beth has retired from Microsoft so we're looking for someone to fill her capable shoes. In addition to this position our team is growing in size to handle a few additional projects like the Gadgets site.

My views would be completely opposite of those present at the moment. But that's what makes it "good", right? Innovative and creative people who look at things from a different point of view.

hey - other than virtual earth, I don't think we've seen any search teams! There's so many to choose from, but I imagine they won't interview until they evolve a bit further
