Seattle Climate

This is crazy - if I'm reading this correctly, the summer time in Seattle is 50s-70s, and never hits 80!  Anyone know how many days/average it rains in the summer time and winter?

Seattle has horrible, horrible weather.

Not as bad as, say, Chicago - but let's just say I'm happy with the weather where I live. Sonoma County in Northern California has, quite possible, perfect weather.

And Minneapolis? Heh.

Lookiing forward to heading to Seattle tomorrow w/ a week's vacation w/ my wife.  One of the things she is looking forward to is the fact that it is never in the 80s.  A big selling point for her.  Who knows maybe we will find a job there.

I'll follow up w/ a whole report on the trip.

Its programmer meca out there, the job Market is super in Minneapolis, but in Seattle, I had 8 companies interested in me the first 2 days I sent my resume around!

You're not reading it correctly. That's the average high.

Now, take a look at the "warmest ever" column--it's clearly above 70 from February to November.

I'm from Madison, Wisconsin, and I think the Seattle weather is pretty nice. (I've lived in Seattle proper since late 1999.) No dog days of August with temps of >95F and 98% humidity in Seattle. It does tend to drizzle a lot in winter, and summer tends to be dry and nice. It does occasionally get hot.

Erm, sorry, that was off message. Continuing: Of course, with the constant rain, awful traffic, insane real estate prices, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and vocanoes life is a bit rough here, but you're welcome all the same.

Seattle is pleasant in the winter - far better than many places.  We spend most of the winter "lows in the low 30s, highs in the mid 40s".  It tends to be gray and boring.  Not "really" winter enough.  We often get snow two or three times in the winter, but it rarely lasts more than a couple of days.

Summer isn't hot enough for me.  We spend most of the summer in a "lows in the upper 50s, highs in the mid 70s" pattern.   ZZZzzzz.   But we do get plenty of low 80s in late July and August.

I moved to this area over a year ago out of New England.  While I'm told we had a mild/dry winter last year, I'm still quite happy with it.

Every part of the nation has issues, be it hurricane, floods, tornados, snow, ice, mud slides, earthquakes, locusts, frogs, ligthening, chronic fog, and/or lava flows.  You pick the disaster you can live with and you live with it... same philosophy for finding a spouse.

Given the choice between the rainy 46 average degree Jan and a snowy/icy 5 degree Jan of New England?  No choice.  Add to that the two days that it hit 90 with <70 humidity this entire summer with 55 degree nights and 6 days of sun at a time this Jul/Aug?  Versus the 95 degree 99.44% humidity of New England from June to September?

It's all about choices, but I wouldn't be so quick to call the Seattle weather sucky until you've lived it for a while.

One of the biggest things to place value on city from my perspective isn't the weather as much as the culture...

is there any other place on earth where there are so many gifted coders?  I'm looking forward to meeting lots and lots of people.

Moved here from Michigan. It's so nice in the summer. I'm not sweating like a pig the whole time. None of the apartments need A/C. I needed a small fan for like a week in July. I was getting sick of all the snow in Michigan too.

Yes...but I commute into the cities to work.  I've tried looking over on Dice.com and in a few other places...and I haven't seen a whole lot that I wanted to even apply to.  In fact, the last time I looked at Dice it was flooded with Robert Half openings...basically a temp service with a shaky reputation...and lots of other temp services (even though I left the job "type" wide open).

The last opening I saw was a few weeks back in the paper (blech) for data warehouse/developer work with a hardware distributor.  That's hardware like hammers, nails, door hinges, etc.  I didn't feel like tracking nuts and bolts all day long.

wow - I know your history - I think Minneapolis sucks for you.  I can't say that Seattle is developer Nirvana yet, but I'm giving it a shot.  I'll let you know

I can't wait - winter here is complete cloud cover, never a blue sky, never a cloud formation  - just a blanket of super high clouds.  Grey ceiling.

Its 35 degrees and rainy - I'm phyched.  I wish I could quit my job today and just go.  Seattle has incredible weather... relatively

I am currently living in Montreal and I am quite fed up with the weather here, too cold in winter and too hot and humid during summer, I really wouldn't mind Seattle's rainy but cool weather.
Actually I'm planing to move to Vancouver in a few months for this exact reason. The job market is probably pretty bad there compared to Seattle but being a Canadian I won't need to find a sponsored job first to move there.
