Basically Vista has virtual folders based on essentially meta data i give to feeds such as "work" "school" "comics" you get the idea.
Why not have an RSS reader working in the same principle so that when i go to select the "work folder" it really just shows me all the feeds that are related to my job.
Why would I want this? Information is overlapping. I've not used RSS for more than 4 months and am already reaching 100 feeds. Scobles blog for example, do i put it in my folder for people blogs or my folder for microsoft?
a feed can fall into many catagories, i like virtual folders and would like to know if any rss readers add this functionality. i told nick bradbury of feed demon about this yet it doesn't seem to be getting any attention.
If anyone else wants to build a solution then hey, power to you! COUGH RSS BANDIT COUGH

Funnily enough, I saw this post whilst using Google Reader (Beta) -- it's basicly an online RSS Reader.
Tagging is somewhat similar to GMail.
Check it out here: http://www.google.com/reader/
It was only launched a few days ago, so the interface still needs a bit more work, but it's definitely usable.
-
Mozilla Thunderbird can do this through its saved search folders feature AFAIK. If you don't mind a beta product, you could use 1.5 beta 2, which includes podcasting support.
-
I downloaded and installed that tunderbird beta but i do not see the taggin feature like i specified above. and for feed lounge i submitted my request to be in the bets, so i am still left without a solution.
-
GreatNews is a desktop based RSS reader and has a basic version of tags implemented.
This is the reader that I switched to recently (from RSS Bandit) because of RSS Bandit's inability to efficiently manage a feed list of greater than 100 blogs. -
Thanks for the tip but it still doesn't work how I want it.
Basically take this example. I go to Scoble's blog, I add it to my reader, on adding it asks me what tags I should give it, I put in blog and Microsoft
now on a window pane on the left instead of having folders per say with all my feeds organized in a hierarchy, I would have "folders" with all the tags I have created.
Why does this work? Scoble’s feed is a blog so it should go in my blogs folder... but then again it also is very much about Microsoft so I want it in that folder too. Why have the same feeds in 2 folders? Some news readers won't even let you do that.
With tagging I hit blogs and read all the news I want, then when I hit Microsoft his feed is also there as well.
Feeds have content now-a-days that overlap each other a lot. A site that has a feed about video games might also be kick a** about hardware news, so do I stick it in my gaming folder, or in my technology folder?
With tags, folders are eliminated and you have a scenario similar to windows vista virtual folders. It works well in my opinion. -

Perhaps not quite tagging, but it searches feed (subject, sender, body etc) and you can then save the search (better than tagging IMHO).
Right-click News & Blogs, define what you want to search for, do a search, then click Save as Search Folder. Alternatively, select News & Blogs, then go File > New > Saved Search
While not strictly an RSS aggregator (it does email and usenet as well), it is a good alternative to Outlook Express.

Not a good enough solution, someone must know of something better out there.

bump, still no good solutions out there.

I know of a good RSS reader coming out in January, 2006

It will be more than anything you have ever seen in this field. -
Have you tried Flock at all?
It may be a long shot, but if you like Thunderbird you could ask about it in one of the Thunderbird Forums. Or make a request in the MozillaZine Extensions forum and maybe someone would develop an extension for Firefox / Thunderbird (although I expect Flock will have this kind of feature). -
Flock doesn't have this feature, and damn you Ewolh software let me beta test!
-
Maybe if you request it there could be a chance of it being implemented.
It sort of does what you want (with favourites rather than Feeds). In Flock, go to a page. Right click then Star this page and you can add tags. When you go click the star (Favourites Manager) you have collections and tags.
If it is far from what you want, then perhaps it is not the best tool. But for managing favourite websites and seeing what other users bookmark the same pages I have not seen better.
I'm surprised there are no tools that do not do what you want though.

I've been pushing a few developers to do this. I wish the dev at RSS Bandit could read this.

Stick around for a bit, your wishes may just come true.
