What the hell is this? I need someone to explain this to me. I know the trademark (corrected) hasn't gone through yet, and I really hope it doesn't. What
kind of strategic move is this?!

They're filing for a trademark not a patent.

Good question...
Completely guessing here -- SOME kind of video infrastructure akin to the iTunes Music Store, but on a larger scale? That is, there might be chat rooms for specific shows, user ratings and user reviews of specific episodes, etc. (Like Channel 9, where you can leave comments for specific videos.)
Who knows, maybe even upload your own videos?
The other thing that would make sense would be for them to put kiosks in their Apple Stores (and elsewhere...?) so that people could buy their content and have it burned to DVD while-u-wait. The download time for a single episode of a TV show is supposed to be, what, 20-30 minutes? That will get REAL old if you, say, want to buy & download an entire SEASON of a TV show. So it makes sense (I guess) if you could either 1) buy the season online and then pick up your custom-burnt DVD at the Apple Store, or 2) make your purchases at the Apple Store and have the DVD burned while you wait. (For the latter to happen, the Store would have to have some nice fat bandwidth going into it, or there'd have to be some kind of local cache of shows, or both.)
Other possibilities:
- Something to do with new iPod phone (there was something about provisioning communication services)
- Something to do with Apple's secret tablet-pc-like device
- Something to do with the fact they are starting to include video cameras on Powerbooks
- Something to do with the Special Event happening in NYC on October 19th, on the eve of the PhotoPlus Expo. (Would make sense to come out with a camera or recording equipment then...) One of the patents has this verbiage:
"apparatus for recording, transmission and reproduction of sounds, images, or other data; portable and handheld digital electronic devices for recording, organizing, transmitting, manipulating, and reviewing audio, video and still images files"
...sounds like a camera to me...
- AirPort Express with VIDEO streaming? -

Actually that makes a WHOLE lot more sense. And it also explains the vagueness of the definition.

Steve Jobs didn't invent the internet, but one of their board of directors did.
