I was wondering after Beer28 keeps saying "Back when I used Windows" just how long ago that was...and then started thinking back to the old days of when I started to use Windows...so let me ask...
How long have you been using Windows?
What was your first version of Windows/DOS/Other Microsoft OS?
What kind of computer was it on? (Sure post a picture)
Maybe what did you do with it? Work/Play/etc...

I had Dos then went to Windows 95.
When I had Dos I got my brother to open up games so I could play them. Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Doom. I was a hardcore gamer at the age of 4.
-
I've only been using it since 3.0 on a 286 (don't remember which version of DOS).
Followed by
Windows 3.11 on a 66 MHz Packard Bell 486
Windows 95 on a 166 MHz offshoot brand Pentium
Windows 95/98 on a 333 MHz Gateway Pentium II
Windows 98 on a 800 MHz Gateway Pentium III
Windows XP Home on a 2.8 GHz Gateway Pentium 4
Currently Windows XP Pro on a home built dual 3 GHz Xeon box.
And for what it's worth...
Been using Mac OS since version 6 (back when it was System 6).
Linux since 2.6.5 on Fedora Core 2 (only been using Linux for about a year now) -
Since 3.11. I've used all the desktops from 3.11 to XP, excepting Me (I didn't miss much there, thats for sure). The only server OSes was the Win2k server flavors and Win2k3.

The first computer that I played with for any amount of time was the Dragon 32 which came with Microsoft Extended Basic. This was back in the early 90's and it started my interest in computers which resulted in me being the Software Engineer that I am today. I remember the cartridges and the external tape drives you could use.....ahh memories

Since 3.11.
- Windows 3.11 on Everex 386
- Windows 3.11, OS/2, and Windows 95 on a 486 Laptop
- Windows 95B on a Pentium 233 (Explorer is faster on this machine than it is in Windows XP, I think)
- Windows XP on a Pentium 4 2.6 GHz
- Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop w/ Pentium M 1.86 Gz (the machine I am typing on right now).
-
I played some With Windows NT 3, Ive mostly been a UNIX guy. I started using Windows pretty steadily since 2002. We made the full switch over in 2003.
-
Since XP Home.
But I've downgraded and upgraded to far better and dare i say worse versions of the platform.

Windows 286. On an IBM PS/2.
We had another PS/2 which had OS/2 on it and PC/Support to connect to the System/38s and AS400s. Which had the ability to map one of the drives on the minis as a local drive. And suddenly I had 256Mb of storage, and I didn't know what to do with it.
-
Since Windows 2.0 in 1988 on a 808x with a Turbo button to boost it to 10 MHz. I used it to write papers for school mostly and write C and Turbo Pascal programs.
-
1996 - 3.11
...
...
Now - XP

The earliest version I used was 1.0. Boy, it sucked.
The next version was Windows/286 in a biochem lab environment.
Then, NT 3.1 and Windows 3.11
Then Windows 95. It sucked less.
Then NT 4. I had great hopes for NT 4. I led the charge to replace Netware with NT 4 in my business unit. I uttered the words, "better than unix". I was wrong, but that's how high my hopes were.
Then Windows 2000. I uttered the words "First and last good version of Windows". This was essentially the real Windows 1.0, after all that time.
Then Windows XP. I uttered the words, "Windows 2000 plus fisher-price playset".

Back when my first laptop ran on DOS 3.2 I had Microsoft Works and it had a feature called Windows.

There have been too many to remember, but some of the ones that immediately come to mind are:
1981 - Radio Shack "Color Computer" with a 1mhz Motorola 6809 CPU. The operating system was in ROM. it wasn't Windows, but it was written by Microsoft.
1987 - 4.77mhz IBM PC/XT with DOS 3.0(?)
Early to mid 90's - 12mhz 286, 25mhz 486 and 166mhz Pentium I with various versions of DOS from 3.x to 5.x and Windows 3.x
1996 to 2001 - Various AMD cpus running Windows 95, 98 and 2000
2001 to present - Windows XP

Yes sir! Windows 2000 was the real Windows 1.0Cairo wrote:Then Windows 2000. I uttered the words "First and last good version of Windows". This was essentially the real Windows 1.0, after all that time.

Since I had 3 Commodore computers (VIC20, 64 then Amiga500) I only started using Windows in 1996 so it was Win95 that was my first Windows OS and it certainly wasn't better than Amiga OS :O
It took till 98SE before I could say otherwise, even though I wouldn't want to go back to Win98 now that we have XP.
