The GNOME is the GNU Graphical Desktop, it's the default desktop environment on Ubuntu, as well as Edubuntu. It provides us with file managers, network browsers, menus, and system tools. GNOME also provides an application framework, and many of the applications available in Edubuntu has been created using the GNOME framework.

I love how all of these new and wonderful open source projects have one thing in common.....they all look like Windows. Never any fresh ideas.

That's exactly what I see, Linux is just a freeware Windows.

Even when Vista comes out, it will take the linux crowd less than a month to copy the look.

What I don't bloody understand is why no one copies the Mac OSX look?!

Looks more like OSX in one sense (menu at top).

Plus have you used an Linux based OS's? Gnome functions differently to Windows, so does KDE. I admit that I have only used them once or twice, but they are not the same as Windows (similar maybe).

Gnome has a breadcrumb trail (which incidentally, Vista will have, and they added it before the first Vista screenshots with it in). File contents as thumbnails - Gnome/KDE did this first. Though I am not sure that they will admit it, Microsoft has taken ideas from open source. After all, if it wasn't any good, Linux wouldn't be still around after 12 years.

Taskbars and statusbars are not Windows specific, and what alternatives to them are there? If windows aren't kept in the task bar, where should they be?

Also, if they do something completely different, the usage would probably be a lot lower. Have something similar, but tweak it to add anything missing and that will attract users.

Why even bother switching though if that is all they do?  They can IM, browse the Web, and email on Windows without wasting a weekend installing and learning a whole new OS.

By the time Microsoft support expires on Windows XP, customers will have already bought a new PC with Windows Vista on it.  The price of Windows is amortized into the cost of a new PC.

It'll be interesting to see how the $100 Linux-based PC's do in developing countries.

I think computer enthusiasts make a bunch of assumptions about computer users that don't apply to casual users.

Like I said Beer before, are you saying Netscape 8, OpenOffice and Apache 2 are old software? Also, I like computers and I dont particularly care for the Linux approach.

I didn't say it was free.  When casual computer users buy a PC, they buy the hardware and the software, not just the hardware.  A PC without software is useless to a casual computer user.

Who plays games on their computer? I use my XBox and soon to be XBox 360 for playing games. Two machines both with different uses. Sure some people play games but most game players and high end users already have systems that can and will take advantage of Windows Vista and I havent heard one gamer or high end user who is drooling over Ubuntu, SuSE 10, or Fedora Core 4. Most of em are more than excited about Windows Vista. Second Beer, No matter what Microsoft does right, and they have done alot right with Windows Vista, it will never be good enough for you. So why do you want to debate everybody? Especially in a Windows forum which is still beyond me. You cant change my opinions, I have already formed them and if I think Linux is a peice of crap and the people that use Linux are ignorant wastes of life (loads that should have been swallowed), most dont know anything, and are some of the most unrealistic and flighty people on the face of this planet. And that most if not all of the Linux companies around are the most unprofessional companies anyone can ever hope to work with. How can you even hope to change the mind of someone who has performed those observations, not just by the actions of the community but have actually interacted and even at one time participated in that community.
