Over on the Channel 9 sister site Microsoftgadgets.com we just
launched a fun contest.
By creating a gadget for http://live.com and submitting it to
the gallery, you might win an XBox 360.
More information and official rules can be found in this
weblog entry.
Good luck!

What would I do with a new XBox 360? I suppose I could give away to a relative. I don't need to play any more video games in this lifetime, that's for sure.
-
If only I was particularly imaginative about this sort of thing. Something might come to me, I guess. (Note: on the official rules page on microsoftgadgets.com, under the how to enter bit it links to micrsoftgadgets.com instead of microsoftgadgets.com).

If Microsoft Gadget is Channel9's sister site, where is the Gadget Gal?
What are your trafic stats over on Microsoftgadets.com Jeff? -
One day... if I am successful in achieving a high political or dictatorial office... in addition to outlawing the use of the US currency form known as the mill, I would also outlaw the building websites that take advantage of someone’s typo in order to throw countless ads at the inadvertent viewer.
Why is this second bit important? Over on the rules page at http://microsoftgadgets.com/blogs/gadgetnews/articles/390.aspx, under the How To Enter section, the URL given with instructions is http://www.micrsoftgadgets.com/gallery, a site that leads to plenty of ads rather than the o carrying URL of http://www.microsoftgadgets.com/gallery.
Edit: You beat me to mentioning it Michael. -

You’ve eliminated my arch enemy the mill? That quickly? Wahoo! No more $2.299 gallons of gas! Oh... the link... that is good too. -

Yes, we just round up to the nearest integer dollar amount now.

So now the question moves back to what type of Gadget are you going to build?
Although I am not eligible for the contest, I have a few ideas of ones I am going to try. Anything with an existing RSS feed is a snap, I think maybe something for Netflix queue or maybe something for my home automation setup.
Not sure, how about you all?

well can you explain what the limitations of a gadget are?

Two great resources to get you started:
1. The PDC Presentation - Building Gadgets for Start.com
2. The Quickstart on MicrosoftGadgets.com
For questions the forums http://microsoftgadgets.com/ are also a great place for in depth questions.

Not sure I have the time to enter the contest but...
I like meta-jokes, so I'd probably do a Gadget that listed the top 10 most popular Gadgets....
Yahoo! News most popular/most emailed pictures? They are available as an RSS Feed, but you have to open each item to see the picture. I'd like something that just does a slideshow of the pictures.
Homeland Security Color-Coded Threat Level, only with emoticons.
An iCalendar subscription Gadget...? It would take too much time to implement the whole standard, recurring appointments etc. but maybe something basic...? -
I was once going to do a web site called "AmIScrewedOrNot" which would basicly take your phyical location, the distance between the USA and any country on the Axis of Evil, and the current threat level. It might need to apply weighting based on your country too - so we could rate countries on this scale:
USA (Weight 1)
Shoulder to Shoulder (Weight 0.5)
Switzerland (Weight 0.25)
Axis of Naughty(Weight 0.5)
Axis of Evil (Weight 1)
And then work out a personal threat level for you, right now.
I think that might make a cool gadget.
