Both run side-by-side without any problems. Make sure to create a new instance of SQL Server when installing SQL 2005. Specifying the SQL 2000 instance will upgrade it to SQL 2005.

11. You said “free for one year” — what does that mean, exactly? Will you be charging for this later?
We originally announced pricing of Visual Studio Express at US$49. We are now offering Visual Studio Express for free, as a limited-in-time promotional offer, until November 6, 2006. Note that we are also offering SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as a free download,
and that this offer is not limited to the same promotional pricing period as Visual Studio Express.

12. Do customers who acquire the Visual Studio Express products during the free promotional pricing period have to pay after the first year if they want to continue to use them?
If you acquire Visual Studio Express products within the one-year promotional period, you will enjoy the rights granted in the applicable license at no cost for the term of that license.

Everything up until Steve B. was on stage (generic rock, long boring video about posters, flashing 'rock' all over...)..... Then everything Steve says up until he starts talking about the product, which is basically just a string of business buzzwords
which really don't mean anything.

Why doesn't he just get on stage and talk about the new features? The prices and why people should buy it? Why stand there are talk about innovation and the .Net platform and bluh bluh bluh bluh bluh...

I put music on to drown out Blamer while he went on and on until he got to interesting things.

heh, this is manip who's posted - have you ever seen him turned on by ANYTHING?!

I watched up to the end of Steve Ballmer talking and thought it was OK. It got a bit of excitement going. Fact is if you're out of the office for a day it's fun and gets people enthused.

My criticism would be of the 'Rock Star' video. It reminded me of some of those 'show the crowd how cool we are' videos shown at PDC - they're ALMOST there but not quite. Like the Bill Gates/Napoleon Dynamite special at PDC, or in this case the "Rock Star"
video - too many awkward bits or slightly embarrassing moments that make you squirm a bit and make you realise you're not watching a really slick video but nerds trying to look cool and not always pulling it off.

Personally I always feel sorry for the rock acts who have to appear at these gigs. Great idea to get the crowd talking about the event but imagine if you're the band - having to play to a bunch of seated developers who sit politely waiting for the main event.

I'll be the one you can hear snoring in his seat during the quiet bits: Registration for the Ascend Partners Launch breakfast (held just before the main event) is 7.30am, and I have to get across London first.

Now, despite generally liking Microsoft, Steve Ballmer is not my cup of tea. It is that motivational coach style that turns me off. Mark Miller (the CodeRush guy) is more my style. Or, in the fictional character realm, Spock. So sincere and informed overdrive
or just the facts presented in a sober fashion. Maybe Steve is sincerely enthousiastic but it comes across, at least to me, as that calculated presentation so many managers use to compensate for lack of content and as a pre-emptive strike against any critics,
who'll come across as grumpy killjoys. The 'let's go get'em' peptalk doesn't work for me. The second presentation got me back into Visual Studio after nearly jumping out.

But that's just me

To ship software faster is a right direction when you got a strongly competitor, but look back, VS2003 already is the best of best development tools in the Win32 before VS2005 shiped, and there no such a compeitor is exists.
If MS wants fast money, they should to earn the money from others(e.g. Office users)who don't or less know about our software industry.
MS and their developers are supplement each other, MS gains from provide a platform for developers, and our developers gains from support the platform for MS, in a nutshell, VS as a bridge should be a FREE software.

I'd imagine the Express Products probably function like standard trial software, downloading now... will find out soon. I myself am definitely glad that they will be free for the first year. It's just helpful (plus, I might have permanently upgraded to
C# from Visual Basic in a year, therefore elliminating my need to purchase both).

Worst launch ever, I mean is this a rock show or a technology product launch? Go watch an Apple launch and learn a thing or two.
Yes because we all want to see Steve Ballmer come out in a black turtleneck...and talk about how they are innovating because they released the same product for the third time...but it has a REMOTE! MUAHAHAH...

I'd rather see Ballmer get fired up and push the product then him not make an appearance and it just slowly downloaded. Some times that crazy "YAHOOOOO!" style is what does get people pumped up.

BTW: Don Box is who they shoulda had to the release...the man is an inspirational god

I can write that RSS Reader control in 6 minutes. Shoot, I can write a custom RSS Parser for your own data as well.
Um, I got Visual Studio 2005 Professional.
I know, the license sticker says "Standard" but it installed Professional.

At least it *says* it's professional. Can anyone clarify this?
