I think you need to be more politcally correct about Microsoft's products so I re-wrote your post to include that... Feel free to edit over the original:

My computer, similar to those supplied by Apple, does not have the minimal requirements, as advised by Microsoft to run the MSN Search Bar. Yahoo! Desktop Search has lower requirements but does not index as much content and also Yahoo! lacks Microsoft's expert
knowledge of the Windows platform and do not perform to Microsoft's high standards.

Although I love MSN Search Bar I feel that I must remove it until I am able to buy a system that is over the minimal system requirements for running Microsoft Desktop Search. How might I do so in a safe, and easy way?

Manip, I don't want to get rid of the MSN search toolbar.

I use it to use MSN search which rocks.

I want to uninstall windows desktop search which sucks - I have a brand new dell, all I have running is my dev tools. It hangs my computer on shutdown, and tanks my computer constantly - it indexes folders it shouldn't be.

Yahoo is clearly a better, more performant product.

So how do I get rid of the windows desktop search without giving up the toolbar I need for MSN searches (MSN is my favorite internet search app, Windows desktop is my least favorite desktop search by a longshot)

All you have to do is remove the program from the Startup folder in your Start Menu.

Really. That's the only place it starts up.

Calling it malware is also (1) FUD, (2) incorrect, and (3) dilutes the value of the word. Please don't call something malware when it isn't, because the line gets blurred - and
that is not a good thing.

This is the latest released vbersion. It should appear in the Add/Remove Programs as "Windows Desktop Search".

I honestly can't see how it could have been removed from there...

You can also try this:

Start/Run... msconfig
Go to the Startup tab
Find Windows Desktop Search in the Startup Items list and uncheck it
Ok, Close, Save, etc

This will prevent the service to start automatically.

Doesn't appear in Add/Remove. I even tried uninstalling IE7 and re-installing Desktop Search over top of itself. I realize I can disable it from starting but I'd really like to remove it completely. Although I like many of it's features it does have some

I found the log from the re-install I tried. Interestingly this line was listed:
I'd forgotten about that! What a fantastic product that was! (Didn't it have a "random" search? WTF was that all about? I like the random article on Wikipedia, but I don't really think taking me to a random selection of the files on my PC is quite as interesting.)

I have used Copernic (I like the UI best of all the desktop searches), but my favorite right now is X1 (now free for personal use). Regarding WDS, I will wait for 3.0 and see what changes it holds, if only to see if I can uninstall it .

Doesn't it seem odd that the WDS install process sets the "create uninstall folder" switch to 0?

Office 2007 (Outlook) constantly nags and shills until you install Windows Desktop Search. Once you've done so, there is no entry in Add/Remove Programs. You can sort of disable it, provided you are pretty technical, but you can't get rid of it.
[rant]
You know, it scared me when MS announced that they were going to screw around with the NT base OS. When they released XP I was pleasently supprised to see that they didn't jack it up. For years, the improvements kept comming. IMO there isn't a better OS out
there than Windows XP, and I started to loose touch with all the MS bashers out there.

Since the release of Office 2007 and Windows Vista, MS has completly reversed everything they accomplished with XP. I couldn't remember the last time I saw a bluescreen that wasn't hardware related when my buddies Vista box crashed on him the first time...
and then the 20million times after reminded me of the old Win95 PnP problems. Frankly, Vista sucks. Office 2007 sucks. And when MS retires Windows XP I will probably move back to linux with all the other MS haters.

I don't see any (useful) additional functionality added to Vista or Office 2007. I'm trying to figure out why I'm paying to loose features in products that have served me fine for years. I really don't want the big heavy GUI that both incorporate. It's not
like my computer is some old POS (Turion 64 ML-44 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, RAID 0), but it lags with Office 2007 because of all the ugly new flashy graphics... and now I cannot find most of the basic features. Same with my buddies new Vista box (P4 HT 3.2GHz, 1GB
RAM, SATA), its not the best in the world... but XP would run quick on it (and be stable). Why does MS insist on breaking their own products? Do they really expect people to pay for this stuff?
[/rant]

With all that said, to fix WDS after you have disabled the indexing service you have to go to C:\Program Files\Windows Desktop Search and delete or rename the folder. There may be more that I'm missing for a clean uninstall... but at this point I don't care...
it worked.

And actually, the search pet is gone after doing this... so it looks really clean and professional. If there is no timebomb attached to my hack, I think I will prefer this to the default XP search.

I have to agree with some of the comments here on performance. I've got a new (2 month old) Thinkpad laptop, Dual Core CPU, 2GB RAM and 60GB disk (25GB free) and desktop search kills the machines performance. The worst thing for me is on boot-up, when
I login desktop search seems to go crazy and I have to snooze it, why does it run / index on login / boot? Can't it wait for a bit and let my drivers finish loading before killing my performance? Really annoying.

Coffeehouse - Uninstall windows desktop search!! howto

I do not believe that you can uninstall it.

I tried that by going through the normal Control Paner uninstall routine and it still runs but keeps poping up run errors.

The real problem is the search indexing .EXE.

I commented it out and the performance of my Dell Laptop went up immediately.

here is what I did:

1. Open Task Manager and expand

2. Click on Mem Usage to see who / what is hogging up memory

3. searchindexer.exe was at the top on my list

4. Close Taskmanager

5. Open Windows Search (yeah, I know but click to use the old version and close the new (crappy) version

6. Do a search for "searchindexer"

7. I had several hits but selected the actual application

8. Select it in the list and right click and choose rename

9. Insert a "!" and a space at the front of the file name

10. Close search

11. Cold re-boot your machine

Now the searchindexer will not load and run and your maching peformance should increase.

On Vista, unindexed directories should be searched with grep. On XP, you have to click to use the "classic search" functionality for unindexed locations. Not ideal, but that's why it got better in Vista.

If you're copying something into an indexed directory it make take a short time to be indexed, but it shouldn't be
that long. Still, it is an area we're working hard to improve - but it is a complicated issue.

Windows Desktop Search does display in Add/Remove Programs. It took me a while to find it. And I believe this may be the sole issue with our users calling saying they are getting the pop up box about network issues in Outlook. I believe we will be sending
an uninstall packet or manually uninstalling from all our machines. It's name in Add/Remove programs is Windows Search 4.0.

It's hard to see how desktop search can cause network issues for Outlook, but ...never say never.

However, far more likely is actual networking issues or problems with an exchange server.

I've seen situations where somone unplugging their notebook from the network has caused everyone connected to that particular switch to be temporarily disconnected, and people's outlook say that it's lost connection with the exchange server... and then reconnect
a few seconds later. It took us ages to track it down to an older model HP switch that simply didn't like people disconnecting in a certain manner.

FWIW: I removed Desktop Search 4.0 from our network, simply because the install base is older equipment, and the indexing was killing the performance... but this problem is common to all similar index/search programs on our older machines.

"I think you need to be more politcally correct about Microsoft's products so I re-wrote your post to include that... Feel free to edit over the original:

My computer, similar to those supplied by Apple, does not have the minimal requirements, as advised by Microsoft to run the MSN Search Bar. Yahoo! Desktop Search has lower requirements but does not index as much content and also Yahoo! lacks Microsoft's
expert knowledge of the Windows platform and do not perform to
Microsoft's high standards.
Although I love MSN Search Bar I feel that I must remove it until I am able to buy a system that is over the minimal system requirements for running Microsoft Desktop Search. How might I do so in a safe, and easy way?"

Buddy, if you're gonna spout out crap like this, maybe you can muster up an answer for me:

Based on "Microsoft's expert knowledge", why does WDS (at version 4.0) STILL not support indexing of network drives for 64-bit systems? I can search 'em manually, but I can't index 'em... now that's what I call "Microsoft's high standards".

Performance.

It's pretty much impossile to produce an accurate index of a remote share, where any number of changes can occur without the local indexer being any the wiser. That means that indexing remote shares would require perpetually rebuilding indexes or putting
up with horribly inaccurate results.

WDS takes that problem right out of the picture by using the WDS engine running on the remote machine to obtain indexing results for the remote share, but that rather relies on WDS running on the remote machine to enable it.

Thanks Andy, this is the first response I've found ...perhaps I shouldn't have posted in such a rude way

Anyways, can you explain how I can setup my network in this way:

"WDS takes that problem right out of the picture by using the WDS engine running on the remote machine to obtain indexing results for the remote share, but that rather relies on WDS running on the remote machine to enable it."

Currently I've removed WDS and I'm using GDS. Google indexes each night after I leave work and it's good for the next day, but as you mentioned, this does not take into account changes to the network during the day. Also WDS works with Solidworks and offers
some functions that GDS does not (if it were working).

Any suggestions?

~~~~
Here's my scenario:
We are running several computers with SW 2009 (soon to be 2010) (1) XP Pro SP3 32-bit & (2) XP Pro SP2 64-bit.
We keep our SW parts on a network drive.
With the XP Pro SP3 32-bit system, Windows Desktop search allows me to index mapped network drives. The 32-bit system has no trouble using the built-in SW search function.
Unfortunately, this is not true for the XP Pro SP2 64-bit system, because WDS does not support indexing of network drives for 64-bit OS. "Q: I cannot add a UNC file path on a 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating system. A: No workaround.
The UNC protocol handler doesn’t currently support 64-bit versions of Windows."
What this means to me is that the built-in search function in SW on my 64-bit system does not find files on the network. The only way is to manually search in WDS (rather than in SW) and point WDS to the specified network drive.
If anyone can correct me if I'm wrong or point me in the right direction, that would be much appreciated.
~~~~

Are you saying that if I run WDS on the remote machine I should be able to use my 64-bit machine in the same way I use the 32-bit machine?

Thanks
