Windows Vista (Transparent angled Lines)

if you look at the bottom of media player, the transparent portion there are angled lines, actually you can notice this on all the transparencies

anyone know wht this is and what causes it?>

The only "diagonal lines" I see are chrome of the window that are on the layer above the pixel shader layer.

Are these the lines you mean?



If they are, that's part of the glass effect.

They also move when you drag the window (its subtle however) to make it appear more "glassy"

Looks like an simulated highlight almost like a lens flare.

They do look somewhat misplaced. But it depends on whether the system has a global light angle or not, ie. if all apps 'reflect' the light in the same agle.
This ical application, is it a part of office or a part of windows? It looks nice and compact. A far cry from the bohemoth in outlook. Good job!

Its transparency.  Look at the picture under it.  See the diagonal lines on the plants.  See how they correlate with the outer edges of the app.

The glass transparency shows what is under it and adds some light reflection to simulate glass.  If you had a wallpaper with a bunch of circles on it you would see a bunch of circles there instead of lines.

This are glass reflections or with other words: a very bad interface design. Generations of display engineers tried to reduce reflections on displays and then, Microsoft created digital ones to confuse the user. Congratulations.

How is this confusing to the user? It isn't glare, and the image posted on the forum is so small thats its difficult to see it for what it is.

the advantage of transparency is that you can make window edges larger without the window appearing that it is taking up more space.

It funny because there are many more displays with glossy surfaces today than three years ago.

I guess Microsoft somehow is coercing display manufacturers into releasing "bad user interface" hardware...

Of course...  glossy window chrome is going to make me want to go out and buy a glossy monitor...  ??

I don't understand why putting a glossy coating on an LCD is so great.  Do they want you to have horrible monitor glare or something?  My LCD has a flat coating on it and it's plenty bright...

Huh?  How is that a bad UI design?  They're not even part of the actual content of the window. They exist only on the border. 

I've noticed them, but they're only as noticeable as you make them, and considering your thread about the Vista control panel, I'd say that you're too much of a picky person in terms of UI to notice them.

Nowhere do the glass effect or reflections obscure any of the buttons or make them harder to read.  It may be more difficult for those with low vision, but that's why there are accessibility controls in Windows.

I actually like those highlights. But I'm pretty weird in my UI tastes; after all, I like Luna too.

Don't worry, you're not alone.  I like them too.

I like them too...  I use Royale as my theme, so it has those kind of highlights (although a little less glassy) in places, like the start bar and start menu.

Microsoft has to put some type of visual effect in there as well..

I noticed this myself and started complaining about why it was a "faded" glass instead of pure glass...then I went and washed my windows and my daughter threw a toy at it because she thought it was open.

What is the point in making true transparency if setting a opacity to 100% can do the same thing? Point is there needs to be some disturbance or I can claim that there is a glass image below my paragraph here...

It's 100% glass so you don't know any better And if I move it you can't tell. Now let me put a line or make it "hazy" and if I move it you can tell it's a border. If it wasn't for that people would say why not cut borders off applications...then you'd have to make the form resizeable by default...then you'd have to change the way people code...then...see it all falls apart.

BTW: Most of this post was a joke but with some truth to it.
