sorry charles but this will take some getting used to if we're going to start calling him/her/it just "nine". Doesn't feel quite right after a year and a half of channel 9 guy

"Nine" is just too short for a name; granted, other mascots exist with even shorter names (like "Tux") but those words didn't mean a thing, right now "Nine" means the 9th number in the ordinal number system, too ambigious.
Let's have a poll: NineGuy's new name:
- Nine
- NineGuy
- Zero One Niner
- Mortimer
- Anything from here
- Foobar
- Barbaz
- Foobarbaz
- Elbocs
- Selrach
- Yennik
- Elbocs "Selrach" Yennik
- Er...
- That's it

Says nothing. "Noin" is French for nine, yet if you Google it most of the top results have nothing to do with with the French word but are instead of Lt. Noin from Gundam Wing.
(on a sidenote, most names in Gundam Wing are actually numbers: Heero = one, Duo = two, Trowa = three, Quatre = four, Wufei = five, Zechs = six (who's real name is actually Milliardo = billion), Lady Une = one, etc.) -
I suggest "Ix"

i thought there was a nine guy - and a nine girl
( have the top image auto switch on refresh and be done with it

Nine.....you mean like 7 of 9......like the borg....say it isn't so.....the channel 9 guy has been assimilated by the MS borg!
Before he was such a cute and cuddly guy known throughout the galaxy as the infamous "Channel 9 guy"! -
OK. So you don't like the name Nine for the 9 Guy...
I wish we wouldn't have genderized the little foamy thing...
Not sure creating another genderized icon is the right thing to do.
Nothing has been assimilated by the Borg. This is Channel 9. The Borg don't play here.
Mascots typically do have names (beyond that which they are explicitly bound). So, I was only attempting to start a naming spree.
Implicitly,

"Cute and Cuddly"?
Injection-moulded plastic might be cute, but the cold, hard, stern plastic is far from "cuddly".
I propose that a plush NineGuy be created.

I really shouldn't try to make intelligent posts at 1:30 in the morning... You're right of course. Noin's name is based on the German word for nine, "neun". Which invalidates the entire point of the post (since it's not spelled the same). So ignore it.

What about "Ninny"?

Tonatiúh -
Ninny: fool; idiot; simpleton; dunce.
Maybe what you meant was "Niney"? -

Ought to be as you say friend... Beg you pardon as I was only playing with a language alien to my tongue

That's fine... I think I like Niney better than Nine, although I'd rather just call him the Nine Guy.
-

See, even you can't bare to call him anything other than that.
He is either "the channel 9 guy" or "the c9 guy" or "the 9 guy" but none are more correct than the others... -
