Greetings,
I am having problems with Microsoft Update utility. I have set it up to automatically download updatesand inform me when it wants to install them.
However, it never appears to downlod any updates and when I try going to the Microsoft Update page, it fails whenevr it attempts to do the updates.
I have a broadband connection so i would assume that its not a problem downloading things.....
anyone else have this problem???
any help would be great

Does it
- do the Genuine Windows Software check?
- actually download the update installers through the Microsoft Updare Webpage, run the installers but then fails with an error message or fail to download via the webpage?
Any error message?
Just as a note: Have you tried stopping any Virus Protection/Anti-Spyware software just for the sake of making sure that nothing prevents the ActiveX components from running? -
if it helps, I cant enable Background Intelligent Transfer Service either
in response,
it passes the genuine windows check and it is the version that came with my PC.
it appears to fail in the downloading of the files, although if i download each of the recommended updates manually and install them it seems to be ok.....

That's "file not found". How very bizarre.
You could try cleaning the BITS datastore

a lot of FATAL errors from BITS

Check that the BIT service is running as Local System user, might be permissions.
[Edit] Try these. -
Click the Windows update shortcut in IE and when it loads replace the http in the URL with https and load the page, sometimes this can resolve issues

What's wrong with the MS article?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910337
Any site that copies content from site with no ads and then adds ads along with some marginal value like the site you linked... Even if MS supports such sites by allowing them, I don't see them deserving much linkage.

I just had the same problem.
I couldn't enable Background Intelligent Transfer Service either but i fixed it
hit WIN KEY+R in the box type services.msc
R click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service select properties
change the startup type to automatic (delayed start)
THIS IS THE KEY PART
Use these same steps and look for services that have a startup type of disabled
now change all those disabled to to manual
once that is done try to start Background Intelligent Transfer Service
windows update should work now
this worked for me

You might try the permissions on the BITS service - if the machine was ever on a domain, a group policy could have taken effect with the wrong security policy for the bits service.
