You have to check
this out. I only tried it with headphones (baby is asleep) but it certainly freaked me out - especially towards the end. I turned around at least twice.

...I'm using stereo speakers and it just sounded like a matchbox being shaken around from left to right.

You're supposed to listen to it with headphones. Its amazingly realistic. You can even hear the matchbox move above and below your head.

Quite cool. If you think about it, there is no reason why 3D sound should not be possible from headphones. Your ears eventually interpret sound in only 2 locations (each ear) and they are able to give you 3D clues.

+1 digg
The effect was quite convincing. -
Not quite. Actually, your ear canals plays a huge part in shaping the positional sound and when you use ear buds, you lose a lot of that info.ScanIAm wrote:Quite cool. Another indication that real sounds are 3D is that instead of the match box, if you had use another sound that you'd never heard before, the simulated 3D wouldn't work quite as well. Simulated 3D sounds relies heavily on frequency shift and if you don't know what the sound should be, it's tough to know that it's being shifted.
