Apple screws consumers yet again...

Ok, so everyone was thinking that Apple was going to release and Intel notebook at a fairly decent price so they could sell with the new Intel chips...I've been following engadgets Macworld coverage...this doesn't seem the case.

Ladies and Gentlemen....meet the new iMac.




Difference?

1:14 PM -  "We're going to offer it in the same sizes, 17 and 20-inch.  We're going to offer it in the same award winning design.  We're going to offer it with the same features. We're going to offer it for the same prices. So what's different?"

1:14 PM - "We are building in ... the new Intel Core Duo. Each of these processors is faster than the G5, and there's two of 'em."

And the Notebook theory?

1:30 PM - PowerPC: 0.23 rating.  Core Duo: 1.05. "Today we are introducing ... the MacBook Pro"

1:31 PM - "It's a new name because we're kinda done with power, and we want the name the Mac name in our products." The same dual-processor as the iMac in every model. This is hard to believe: 4-5x faster than the PowerBook G5.  These things are screamers."

1:36 PM - "One inch thin, 5.6 pounds. Backlit keyboard with ambient light sensor, scrolling trackpad, sudden motion sensor. DVI video out for 30-inch monitors."

1:38 PM - $1999 1.67 Code Duo, 512 MB RAM, 80GB, 4x superdrive, Aiprort Extreme. $2499 for faster model.

So Apple it seems has just given everyone the finger yet.....again. But it's not over with so who knows

They've just doubled the speed of the best selling machines (faster buses and 667MHz DDR) and you think they're screwing us? Mmm. What *exactly* did you want them to do?

Well if the new convention is to change Power to Mac, the Intel PowerMacs will be MacMacs

The last iMac update was only 12 October.
All those machines, less than 3 months old are now obsolete.

The MacBook Pro is only available in 15"

The spreadsheet in iWork is not a new product ("Numbers"/"Sheets"), but a tables/charting feature in Pages and Keynote.

iPod only gets an FM remote control.

No 30" Plasma Mac, (as if that was likely)

But they hit all the customer "scenarios" dead on with iLife->iWeb->.Mac integration
Shame it will cost $79 a year compared to other services which are hosted for free.

They are changing the name from PowerMac because they like to have the word Mac in the name ?!?
I guess the iBook will become the MacBook Lite?

How much does it cost to buy the same machine as a Windows computer...I don't think even nearly the projected price.




Instead of making a decent PC at a cheaper price and sell more of them. They are increasing price and power. True power is always great but that's not what sells PCs...price sells a ton of them.

Price up the fastest base of both the PowerBook and MacBook with 1 GB of RAM in 1 DIMM, 100GB HD @ 7200rpm, DVD Burner, and 3 years warranty. The newer, faster MacBook is about $100 less than the PowerBook.

Faster and cheaper. Not sure how the consumers are getting screwed... So there's no low end option yet, but given Steve's track record over the last few months, we could get more Intel products any day now.

Were'nt they supposed to release 10.5 or is that later? If they were now I wonder what happened?

10.5 is due end of 2006 early 2007.  About the same time as Vista

And while he does that all those users that would like a new computer however only have about $500.00 can see their nearest WalMart

They've already missed Christmas, and it's a long time until Back-to-School. The market for low-end PC's is very cyclical, so they have some time. Besides, the Mac mini can run all the apps it needs to right now with the power it has (including WoW, from personal experience). In contrast, have fun running Aperture on a PowerBook.

The PowerBook was way out of date and needed a refresh asap. I'm not sure what the deal is with updating the iMac only 3 months after its last revision.

I wouldn't go anywhere near saying they've screwed the consumers apart from saying that - YET AGAIN - the rumours are about 4 billion miles from the reality.  Apart from the Intel thing, which everyone expected, there was literally nothing there.

Still, looks like I'll get another one of those blasted noisy white iMacs in the office (noisy because they are running Linux most of the time we are working on them and the usually-software-controlled fan is noisy and out of control!).  Can't believe they didn't change the design, mind - it doesn't seem it is clear on the case if its running an Intel processor or its an older machine and that could lead to much bemusement and confusion at work!

Interesting thing to see, is I didn't realise that they had sold 42 million iPods.  To me, that seems a really small amount when you consider the media image of everyone having them.

Dell Inspiron 9400, Core Duo T2400 processor (1.83GHz), XP Pro, 17" widescreen, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD, 8x CD/DVD burner, Bluetooth adapter = $2,322, although that is after a current $300 savings offer. I was using the 'Small Business' section of Dell's US website.

The headline price for the 9400 is cheaper - $1,999 - but only includes XP Home for some bizarre reason. That's for a 1.83GHz processor, 80GB HDD, 1GB RAM and 24xCD-RW/DVD combo drive (DVD playback only, no write). Dell are also offering this notebook with the 2GHz T2500 processor.

For some reason the UK site offers the T2600 processor (2.16GHz) but not the T2500.

For somebody that does so much chatting on here, man you just don't get "it" do you. I think you should do a little more research in the hope that you might get "it". I am sure any similar speced PC out there will come in at the same sort $$$, but run along and do your research and you might find that out for yourself.

Remember the cheap Mac is the still PowerPC based Mac mini, I wonder if you'll carry on uninformed again when it makes the switch to Intel.
